Why is the Pioneer 38A nearly twice the cost of the 47Ai?

I don't get it....

heavy duty, better quality built, solid brass bottom for better shielding, audio and video built and shield separately. Side wood panel, THX video quality certified, the 47Ai has none of those except new software...you paid for what you got...

I did not pay for anything yet... I'm still hard at work in the comparison game.

The 47Ai is universal and the 38A is not? is this a corret statement?

    This stuff is nuts man!

Yes it's a correct statement. THe DVD-38A is a benchmark product, a reference DVD player, it only plays DVD-A in addition to DVD video, and not the SACD. The new 47A1 is superior in term of new technology and software(plays almost anything outhere), but it trades off for the quality and reliablility. Buy the 38A you probably own a top of the line Pioneer DVD player, and may be a piece of history, buy the 47Ai, you are in line with the most updated technology and amazing machine, either way, you're the winner.
