VTL 120/50 Stereo Tube Amp

OK everyone I've gotten bit by the tube bug. Thanks to all the enablers on this forum! Since the VTL 2.5 pre came home, of which I'm amazed at how sweet it sounds, I've been looking at the power amps as well.

Anyone have experience with this amp? It seems interesting, switchable from triode to pentode mode.

Can this guy run my SDA SRS's? I play mostly classic rock/metal. Stuck in the 70/80s music era if you know what I mean

I appreciate all advice given. I have learned to trust the opinions here on the forum.

No personal experience with that model, but others. I'd say it'll drive your SDA's and sound good doing it in Pentode. Triode might be a bit iffy.

BTW, you can take those stupid looking cover supports off.

Ah well, if the cage comes with it then the supports serve a purpose. Still, looks a lot better naked.

Output transformers look a little skimpy -- given that I can barely see them.

push-pull parallel pentode mode is gettin' a long way from what tubes do best -- in pursuit of scads of those seductive (to some) watts. Sorta like stuffin' a Hemi in a Caterham Super Seven. Yeah, you could do it, but that wouldn't mean it would be a good idea.

... or so I would opine.

Nothin' against 807s (which are pretty unexotic tubes -- now, a 50 triode... that's gettin' a little esoteric) from my perspective ... but I'd want to hear the amplifier before plunking down lucre (filthy or otherwise).

I'm funny that way -- something about listening to hifi components rather than reading opinions proffered by dipsticks like... umm... well, me seems like the better way to approach the hunt.

-- again, like Epimedes the Cretan's*, just my opinion**

    _______________
    * That's Cretan, not cretin.
** All y'all, doubtless, remember his opinion: "All Cretans are liars", said he. There might be some truth in that... but, then again... ;)

I think you would do very well to grab the Carver. I am listening to my TL's right now, and I can tell you Bob's tube amps and Polk SRS are a match made in heaven. You may upgrade other aspects, buy you will never want for a better sounding tube amp, though you may choose to do the monoblocks like I did.

I don't think NOS 807s are hard to find... but I'll admit they're not something I look for :)

The modern Carver amplifiers seem refreshingly no nonsense compared to some of Bob's early efforts -- and not outrageously priced, either. They're (EDIT: IIRC) hand made in the US, which is nice, too.

If I may offer an opinion...don't just look to dip your toes. I did with the AE line by Cary. I now have a couple grand worth of paper weights between the pre and amp. Make the jump on a quality piece and enjoy.

Not easily.... I have a paperweight here in the form of a Krell CD player that is worth more as scrap aluminum. Great gear up front and you never have to wonder about something better. That's where my rig is now.

I was like you when I joined here. I had a Yamaha RX-v665 and some Monitor 50's and thought I had the best ever. I now have 400 watts of custom built tube power, and all the other gear currently in my sig. I have also gone through several amps/pre's and speakers, including the Magnepan MG-20's... Best advice is to get quality power to those big girls that can actually handle them, then build from there.

When you are ready, I will have a Krell waiting for you with your name on it. :p

One and the same... I will remove the crime scene tape first if you want me to. I am listening to it now. I have found as with all gear of exceptional quality, it can take time to warm up and sound it's best. I had it on for three hours before sitting down. The Oak Ridge Boys never sounded so good.

Carver was my first step beyond your run of the mill stereo components. From my mid 70's Pioneer receiver. I've since had a few SS Carver amps (M1.0t's now karma'd), and still own the TFM35x (which is now back in the box), Carver tuner and CD player (all back in the box). I've read mixed reviews on the SS stuff, but always positives on the tube stuff.

Wow! That was quite the page turner! Those amps truly are "statements" my man!

And you're selling em? I read a lot of "I love these" comments in those threads. Even your wife had a lot of direct influence on the project. Lot's of memories there for sure.

Thanks brother for sharing that. I would've never have found it otherwise. Truly inspirational!

Like I said, I have not heard that model amp, but have heard a number of other David Manley designed amps, even owned one. David Manley was a tube amp guru. I've also heard a number of Bob Carver's tube amps, which are also top notch. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

BTW, Bob really liked my Manley amp.

I just read the sellers description of the sound quality in Pentode and Triode. While he says it is special in Triode I don't think that's enough juice for your speakers and his comments about the sound in Pentode leave a lot to be desired, so I think you should look elsewhere.

It's too bad that VTL 90 is local pick up.

Yep. That was my worry as well. I need something to power the SRS's. I appreciate your effort Jesse as always.

  • I used to own a pair of VTL ST100 monoblocks and a ST150 Stereo amp. I still own a 2.5 preamp and a ST85 power amp. David Manley was one of the worlds best tube amp designers. my advice is that if you can afford it try to get something new with a warranty.

Thanks everyone for your input. In the end, I was able to negotiate the price down a bit, but decided to pass on this piece.

    And the journey continues!

Aw, man, you're looking at this all wrong. Buy a tube amp and get different, more efficient speakers to pair with the tube set up...then, start looking for a really good SS amp to pair with the SDS's. Problem solved.
