So I had a hearing test

Options
I knew going in that nothing much can be done about my tinnitus and that I have hearing loss(esp high freq) in my left ear. Wanted to confirm how much loss I have and just what aids are out there these days. These devices certainly have come a long way in the last 15+ yrs!

I asked them(Miracle Ear) if using an aid in my left ear would allow me to hear music better. Currently I must sit more to the left of the "sweet spot" to get a better sense of the sound stage, but I know I'm not hearing everything...at least as well as I would like.

I realize that this is a very subjective area since not everybody's hearing loss is the same, but I wonder if my music listening experiences will be greatly improved by wearing an aid? I really don't have much of a problem otherwise so music time is probably the only time I would wear one. Anybody out there wear an aid primarily to enjoy music better? I wish I could just give one a test drive.

I don't know of anybody wearing them for music.

But my wife just got a pair and said she can hear a lot more detail in the sounds around her a lot better now. In fact she hears too much and has to turn the volume down to MED. on them.

I wonder if I got hearing aids, would I be able to hear above 10 Khz again?

Or is that hearing gone forever?

How long until you take out the batteries so she doesn't hear you cussing under your breath?

This is right up my alley. Yes, I wear one, and for music, it's hit or miss. You have to remember, these little things are not audiophile quality, they simply amplify. That said, most times I take mine out to listen to music....and yes, tinnitus too. Try it both ways and see which suits you.

    I use this one.

Customer service is outstanding, reasonably priced, unlike others you'll see in the thousands. I can also testify to their durability....having dropped mine in the toilet twice, and gotten in the shower with it on more times than I care to admit. Still works like the day I got it. A little more money and you get more options, depends on your needs.

I just never wanted one, who wants to hear " Hey arsehole, are you listening to me" so clearly ? :)

Tony, how many "channels" is your piece? When I told the specialist that I want one for music he started to relate to audio equalizers saying I probably need a 14 channel one and the lowest they have for CIC (completly in ear) is 24. My insurance will pay up to $900 per piece and I'm tempted to get their entry level one for $600 but it only does 4 channels.

I'm not sure to tell the truth. One thing I do know, is the amount of channels doesn't work like an audio equalizer. In part, your hearing test provides all they need to know and a hearing aid is then adjusted to compensate for what you can't hear, boost what you can. Hearing aids aren't a one size fits all with what they pick up.

Costco offers free hearing tests, but their aids are fairly expensive. You can take that free hearing test though and shop around.

One thing I found out too is, usually with hearing problems, and tinnitus, you have problems in both ears. Most only wear one hearing aid in their worst ear, rarely do you see people with 2 . Your brain compensates after a week or so.

Sometimes I can listen to music with it in, sometimes not, depends on the system and music playing. At the recent audio shows I was at, I found myself at times just removing it and holding it in my hands, and in some rooms just leaving it in. It's not a cure all for music lovers with bad hearing but it does help at times.

I've researched aids more than most, and I can tell you there is only a handful of companies that make them for everyone. Some may charge 3k for one, but in reality it's the exact same as a 1k aid from someone else.

Miracle ear is one such company that charges a boat load for rebranded aids. That cost though comes with independent locations, free visits and cleaning, on site docs, etc. I can also tell you, cleaning them is a breeze so don't make that a priority for having someone else do it.

The in-ear style vs over the ear style- one thing to consider with the in ears, is that your not going to know when it pops out. If your an active guy, that can be a problem. Also, when you chew, your jaws motion will work it back out a bit. Not all the time, depends how hard or long your chewing when eating. For what these things cost, losing one is not an option for me. If an over the ear style pops out, it's still dangling there over your ear. Your more aware of when it does I guess.

In-ear, isn't going to be as easy to find if it falls out, especially in grass. In a restaurant , someone may step on it before you find it.

Read up on reviews for the ones you like. Pro's and cons to each style. Real world living with one is what you want to know, not the spoon fed junk each company puts out.

I really can't see me wearing it other than for music, so losing it should not be a problem. I'm not sure I can get use to one that is over ear. They let me try one of the CIC for comfort, they are so light I almost forgot it was in there. But at $3k it's a no go for me...at least the one they tried to sell me. On the other hand, I would pay $3k if they could cure tinnitus!

None of them do, but it does lessen the noise a bit. Like I said, a 3K aid at these retail joints, is 1k online, and for the most part....it's the same dang thing.

Your wrong if you think you'll only use it for music listening. It helps extremely well when your in a group setting, around the dinner table or out with friends eating and drinking in more noisy environments.

Takes some getting use to, won't deny that, but after awhile you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Believe me, I fought it tooth and nail, the wife and I got in many arguments over it.

Plus side is too, you can hear people whispering behind your back. :) Not sure it's a plus though, as some comments your likely to hear won't be positive. ;)

I have a pair of Costco hearing aids I got several years ago. I paid around $1700 for a pair.

I have a new music setting they offer on the aids I got added in the 6 settings I can use. They are automatic, noise/party, listening to music, outdoor/traffic, television, and {i}focus 360 degree for driving which I just had added last month when I had mine adjusted. I can adjust on my iPhone.

I had a recent hearing test check up where she said my mid range hearing in one ear needed an adjustment. The music setting also had some new settings for music with head phones, music with speakers and one other which I don't remember. I chose music with speakers. She told me the music setting was a full range setting which I believe as I can hear the highs better than some of my other settings. My previous music setting didn't offer the settings I spoke if above.

I chose Costco because they got good reviews and were much cheaper (thousands) than what my ear, nose, and throat doctor offered. Be aware that Costco sometimes changes suppliers of their hearing aids each year as they sign 1 year contacts. The hearing aid person told me they go for the best overall deal in regards to cost, service and warranty. I have been very happy dealing with them as far as the service they provide. I have a good friend who also uses their hear aids and he has also been very happy with then.

@tonyb The audicus site makes it sound great. No pun intended. You’ve almost convinced me to order one. 45 day free trial is pretty alluring.

Great customer service in my opinion too, never had a problem but they are always willing to help if you have one.

I have an Uncle who spent big bucks on one of those top of the line aids. Adjust by phone, music settings, hearing impaired settings for like auditoriums or concerts, blah blah. Might be useful to you, can't say they all suck because we all hear differently. Today, it sits in a drawer, he hates it.

I can tell a difference in most of the settings. There are more adjustments available on my iPhone settings than are available on the buttons on my hearing aids. I didn't really think I would use my iPhone much when I got them, but with more adjustments available it's good to have the app.

No way I would spend what my ENT doctor wanted for the brands he sold. They start in the $3000+ range and went a little over $5000.

Costco also will give you a window to try them and if you don't like them refund your purchase.

Whatever works for you is what you need to use as tony said we all hear differently.
