^^Good point, many people had good life long careers and retired from the likes of Sears, Penny's, Macys, Wards etc.

The 50's and 60's were the heyday of the American middle class, IMHO.

I also noticed during the RECESSIONS, mall traffic was shrinking. About the same time Cell phones were coming into being.

Christmas mall traffic was OK, but then it started to look like a time gone by scene in the halls of the Mall.

I think the decline in mall traffic has been going on for a while now, but I began to really see it after 9/11... Malls are perhaps the most vulnerable soft-targets out there. Topanga Plaza, near my home is especially scary to me, given the layout. People, at a subconscious level, are wary of being caught in a terror event. Two people with bad intent enter the food court of Topanga can do a lot of damage quickly, and while people run for the exits, two additional sickos at either end can do the same, then enter vehicles and be gone within 90 seconds....

I used to work in that mall, and security told me there is zero they can do about it. Combine this with the zero-risk of Amazon and other on-line places, and the mall now has no reason to exist. Even Mrs. Fields and Cinabon suck these days.

It’s nice to have malls and brick and mortars, if this continues we won’t have any stores to walk or peruse.

What’s next? We all become fat and sit on the couch shopping and have Cinnabon and Auntie Anne pretzels delivered to our door?

    Wait that does sound good..

... but seriously, a healthy dose of both (stores and online) is the best combination for us shoppers. Too much online dominance and it creates unintended problems.

More cyber existence, less physical existence.

Might as well live in a cyber world and never leave the house. Become fat because that’s ok, our avatars still look trim and we can hide behind the keyboard no matter how socially awkward we become.

I dunno... I hope my kids don’t live in an era with zero stores.

I think that would be sad.

Not at all, but I also tend to be keenly aware of my surroundings, a remnant of my days in The Marine Corps. There are many people that are still traumatized by 9/11 however, and they subconsciously avoid large gatherings in enclosed spaces. My mom was like that. She loved going to Mall of America. She would go once a week just to walk the place. After that day in September, she went maybe three times a year.

Seriously? THIS is what goes through your mind? I understand wanting to feel prepared and all that jazz but living in fear? If you think the majority of US citizens are driven by fear to not go in public, regardless of where it is, then perhaps a reevaluation is in order.

Online retailers are killing malls, not a crippling fear. Convenience trumps fear. Even major stores like Target are now offering pickup lanes where you can drive up and have your purchases that you made online delivered to your car. It's ALL about convenience.

I understand you have served our country and maybe that turns a different eye for you. However, I can assure you it does not apply to the vast majority of the citizens in this nation.

I said it was a FACTOR, and not the only cause. I must confess, that when I go someplace where there are large numbers of people, I look for suspicious characters. I survey the area looking for places to seek cover, as well as nearest exits. I also look for places of tactical advantage in case there may be an opportunity to assist in stopping a bad situation from becoming worse.

I fear nothing, but being prepared is a way of life. It is impossible to say for certain that fear keeps people from shopping malls, but every year I see on the news some reporter, or feature even, about security of malls at the Christmas shopping season. I did not see such things until after 9/11. People do think about it now and yes, it is an issue. There was a 6 part tv show/documentary a few years back showing what the Mall of America goes through for security during the holidays, and the concerns about the militant Somali population of Minneapolis...

Yes, online retailers are really hurting brick and mortar stores and shopping malls, but to dismiss safety concerns as one of the reasons is missing the mark.

It's been 17 years since 9/11, and that means 85% of the population still lives with those images seared into their brains, Combine that with the younger generation seeing school shootings ,the Boston Marathon bombing, delivery trucks being driven into crowds, and events like Las Vegas, which happened one year ago, and trust me... everyone has a certain level of wariness when it comes to terror threats, even those that have no direct memory of the Twin Towers. You cant even go to Downtown Disney in Anaheim without getting nearly strip-searched.

All this heightened security simply reinforces the fact that everything is subject to possible attack and everyone could be a threat. Sorry, but that's the world we live in today. Online retail removes that threat, and certainly helped to fuel its growth.

Really the mall doesn't offer anything I find interesting anymore anyways. It seems stand alone stores are more the norm and now we have to have a bed bath and beyond every five miles down the road.

There's still Victorias Secret, just sayin....

    The Las Vegas mass murderer...

The FBI immediately took over the investigation, didn't they. No reason for his madness has been shown to us. The FBI took his hard drive and hasn't shown anybody what was on it. I have a feeling.

It backs up John's statements about crowded spaces and psyco killers. There is something happening to our society that can't be ignored. people want to kill a lot of people nowadays for some devilish reason.

And our most brightest minds in our FBI and criminal systems can't figure this out yet? Give me a break. It's the decline of our society and the media is a BIG part of it.

They love BAD NEWS to put out on their headlines and it also gives them job security, doesn't it.

I might go to a football game but concerts? I don't know.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.
