I'll start with a sticking point about Oppression that some seem to think is what Colin was originally protesting. If you can please point me to an example of this oppression I'd appreciate it, which should be easy since it's made out to be such a systemic problem in our society.

From where I sit in the cheap seats, and from my life experiences, I see none. In fact, I see more people of color given more than whites in some instances, more leeway. I'll bring up 2 examples for you to debate if you wish.

1- On a firefighters exam, people of color were allowed to redo the exam while some whites weren't. Acceptable scores were lowered for some of color. This is a racist practice. A persons color should not dictate opportunity, anyone want to argue that fact ?

2- 2 people of color where asked to leave a Starbucks for loitering, having sat down and not bought anything. If they were white, they'd have been escorted out and arrested if they made a stink. However, because they were asked to leave, some drew the racist card because of their color. Touched off national headlines and Starbucks was held accountable for upholding their own policy. Again, all our laws, company policies are not designed to apply only to certain races. Just because you are a person of color does not absolve you from obeying store rules, or laws. Want to dictate store policy, open your own store and do as you please, respect those you visit.

Now, I know someone can probably bring up some examples of oppression, BUT first ask yourself if these are examples of isolated incidents by some bigot somewhere, or a national trend. We will always have some example of bigotry, somewhere, because humans are not perfect beings. That doesn't mean we have a national crisis though. So if someone can point me to this national crisis of oppression, I'd sure appreciate it.
WOW Tony. I would think someone from other states would have that view. With you being from Chicago I'm shocked. Chicago's Black Belt or South Side is where many fled to from the South. Nevertheless, Chicago has a long deep rooted history of racism, segregation, housing segregation and redlining mated with policies that reinforced this. Then white flight created suburban development and favorable home loans for whites. Their schools got better and there property value much higher than the neighborhoods they left that they sold to blacks.

This is the same thing that happened around the Country and for sure did happen where I'm from in Detroit. There are all well know facts about the history of America.
After the riots, white flight, and the declining auto industry, Detroit didn't have a chance. Then, the mostly black city was policed by a predominantly white police force with a special task force called S.T.R.E.S.S. (Stop the Robberies, Enjoy Safe Streets). I don't even need to get into how that went in the late sixties and early seventeens. There are many stories about the STRESS and oppression that department ignited on the city. Blacks had targets on their heads! It was Mayor Coleman Young that broke up that group and created a police force that better represented the makeup of the city.

As far as Starbucks....the guys told the manager that they were waiting for someone and they will be buying something when he arrived. Even further, after the police arrived and the white friend arrived who stated that they were waiting for him, THEY STILL ARRESTED HIM! Combine this with others who were sitting in the restaurant on their computers, etc that stuck up for the guys saying that they did nothing wrong.... AGAIN......THEY STILL ARRESTED THEM.

The Manager later claimed that there were many problems of loitering and claims that one person even chased her around the shop after telling them to leave. So, here is the flip. Did she called the cops on others? Probably not as no one is talking about it. Why not give the guys the benefit of the doubt and let things play out. In her defense she did state that the City Center Phili location policies of enforcing no loitering did not help the cause. Even so, with all of that in place, the CEO did give the guys a face-to-face apology and stated that it was simply "inappropriate to call the police."

Some are quick to say blacks pull the race card too fast in regards to profiling. However, until you have been racially profiled you really just don't know. Just about every black person I know has been racially profiled at some point in their life. How screwed up is that? We are not making this up! Stop the racial profiling and I guarantee that blacks will finally "drop it."

This is not the 60's, and most the things you proclaim relate to the past. Keeping the past alive is no way to move forward. It should serve as a learning tool though. It should not matter if a cop is black, white, red, green or purple, he/she is a cop. A cop should be chosen from certain criteria/qualifications, with color not being one of them. The problem there is lack of respect, not color. Imagine if we required other things to "better represent the community".

All teachers in an all black community need to be black then ? By the same token, an all white community should not allow any black teachers then because they don't represent the community ?Bus drivers, garbage men, waitresses ? Should basketball teams not allow whites ? Tennis...only rich upper class need to apply ? Hockey has a predominately white audience, should no blacks be allowed to try out or play ?

See how ridiculous that all sounds. The problem with crime isn't which color the cop is, it's respect for the law and fellow human beings. Which isn't exactly being driven home in a one parent household where the kids take care of themselves while mom works 2 or 3 jobs. That btw too, isn't just associated with blacks either, many races experience the same things but the black community has way higher numbers in that regard. Very few black leaders want to address the real problems within their own community/culture. Can't make money like that, so keep the grievances alive and well.

….and just for the record here, because I'm trying to not make this a black vs. white thing, is I have 2 half black grandkids, third on the way. I'm well acquainted with the black culture not only in my private life, but also professionally. I don't look at someone and think color first. I look at character first, which is easily told if you know what to look for. I've run into trash of human beings from every race/color.

Once again, for the sake of staying on topic, please point me to the systemic oppression in this country , today, that holds people of color down. Which is the point of the Colin/Nike thing.

Looks like Nike is making a political statement.

No, Nike is making a social statement. Kaepernick's protest was not political in nature. He was protesting social injustice.

Politics is only one facet of a particular social structure.

How much help would 4.2 Billion dollars have gone towards Kaepernick's and other's issues in their social surroundings around the country? Why don't people like Kaepernick protest Black on Black murders? Black on White murders and muggings and robbing's.
Because he probably doesn't give a rat's butt about them. They don't get BIG NATIONAL news coverage. A point he said he was trying to make. To make a National outrage protest stance.

So the NFL has taken an unknown hit in income. Nike has just taken a hit but the future will tell if it goes back up and maybe even rise to meet Adidas's 400% rise. Nike only had a 50% rise in the same period SO that might be the reason. Nike needed to get their name out there again, maybe, just to feel relevant even if cuts off half of their purchasers.

I was just thinking right now, most of the youth don't care about news or stocks at all. They might not even hear about this for a year or even longer.

One commenter on a news show tonight said maybe the youth that do hear about this will JOIN Nike and their stance, and buy Nike stuff now. MAYBE... ;)

LOL lets see how much money Nike is willing to sacrifice. I am sure they will stop way short of everything when the accountants slap some sense into the marketing and corp execs who thought this was a good idea.

And that lasted about a month... The last time we really came together was WWII. We built enough weaponry to support multiple theatres of operation, and see them through to complete and total victory. We supplied our allies with the tools needed to defend themselves and achieve victory as well. We then pulled together and rebuilt entire continents that were the homes of former adversaries, and then we decided to cap it all off by going to the Moon and back....

But only for a couple of weeks If I remember that period clearly.

I worked with a few guys during that period that HATED seeing all the American flags everywhere. I feel, those couple of guys would also highly approve of those Confederate statues being removed as of late. But otherwise, they were GREAT GUYS in their mid 20's. They showed up everyday on time, worked until the day was done. Sometimes till 2AM, and then they'd be back in at 6:30AM without complaint one. They liked $$$ and didn't want to make it illegally either.

I never heard of DWB until I was 50. I feel for the people who have been pulled over for NOTHING. I've been there myself but I'm not Black. I hated that cop just as much as somebody that was pulled over just for DWB. I was pulled DWW and was taken downtown. Everybody except that cop thought the cop was WRONG! I know he was. But that only happened once.

My white friend back long ago was slammed down onto the ground and had a pistol pushed into his mouth, chipping a tooth. He was mistaken for another person. No apology from the police dept.. He tried to get a lawyer and not one would take his case to sue the cops!

So there you have a small microcosm of White injustice. I might've been killed as my friend if we resisted arrest or ran or tried to wrestle a gun from our arresting officers. But I'm still here. I followed orders.

I whole hearty agree about trash for human being from every race or color.

As far as your question? Well, its a complex answer ....however Blacks and whites generally see racism in the USA very differently. I can tell that you take the position that many claim the victim and don't take self ownership of the issues in their own communities. There is for sure some truth in this line of thought. No one is claiming that others are 100% responsible for the problems in the community. There needs to be more progress within the black community and all need to get over the past.

However, there is a ton of research done by PhD's that state that the playing field is still not equal and there are whites that have not progressed in thinking and beliefs. Even after the emancipation the living hell for blacks did not end and there are remnants that haunt our communities today. Yes, I know, No one wants to have this conversation.

It comes down to what one has experienced and what one believes....and its OK if we disagree. As long as I don't hate you or you don't hate me we can get along.

IMO, I see nothing wrong with this post. People with different view points NEED to talk in a civil manner. If no one talks then nothing will change! Regardless of our views, most here are common folk that have more similarities about life and happiness than differences.

Racism, as told by that brilliant man Sun. Night on "Life Liberty and Levin" goes both ways.

He tried to make CLEAR, it is the LIBERALS and BLACK race holding on to racism to have a reason to blame for the slightest things. Even if it isn't race related at all. Like this "police injustice" in today's ( Not in the 60's. ) society.

It was so ear opening to listen to his wisdom and full understanding from both sides of the picture that he's witnessed over the many, many years.

I like football games. I used to do things on Sunday and missed most games aired before 9PM but I've slowed down by 80% and Sunday games were nice.

I avoided some games last year because of that kneeling during the National Anthem.

Now I hear the NFL might not air the Nat. Anthem on TV anymore. REALLY?

Way to go CK and all of his supporters. Is that going to make you feel better about social injustice and fix anything or make it worse?
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

We will be donating at least a dozen pair of shoes, and cleats, our family will no longer be wearing. Not to mention football jerseys, pants, gloves that have that little swoosh on them; even the Lebrons since they’re Nike.

As mentioned my kid needed new kicks since his new school shoes were Nike.

Me thinks that if people would stop referring to folks as black, Latino, Asian, Muslim or white, some of the racism and rhetoric would simmer down. I mean, come on. Instead of saying that the colored guy up the street....would it not hurt to simply say the gentlemen up the street? Instead of saying the Chinese dude did this or that....could you not just say that the American did this or that?

Me also thinks that it's not Kapernick's message. It's the timing of the message during the national anthem coupled with the NFL's decision to ban other types of protests/respect that has created so much controversy. The fact that our President has asked for specific examples for him to take care of himself with no response doesn't help either. The fact that during the off season, not much, if anything was done to further the cause was done didn't help either. The fact that no one including Kapernick has championed getting to the solution of correcting his message does not help either.

So, given the aforementioned, me thinks that it was just a slap in the face to our country, our flag, our veterans and current military and could have been prevented *if* it simply was not done during the National Anthem. The insult hits too close to home for those who gave the ULTIMATE sacrifice and the family members that survived.

    That's what me thinks.

Have you ever worn Nike's Tony? Come on be honest.

Yes, I have, even had an Apple Ipod at one point. I eat meat, wear leather and don't mind cutting a tree down for firewood.....and on occasion, don't let this get out now, I don't recycle. I really went over the edge by putting money in the basket at church. I'd go confess my sins but....nobody left to hear 'em. :)

Let's get real. Kaepernick had one good year, afterwards pretty much sucked, which is the real reason he is no longer in the NFL. Plenty of other one year wonders ended up out of the league for the same reason.
