Rx-a870 or SR5012

My setup is RTia5 and CSia4....no surround yet, but it will come soon
Is there any major difference between Yamaha rx-a870 and Marantz sr5012? I like the price of the Yamaha on A4L....but can pay a little more if the Marantz is really better
Application is 90% movies/console games

Yamaha TSR-700 (equivalent to RX V6A)

I have owned and really like both brands, but the Yamaha's don't really hit their stride until the 10XX series, and the marantz is a bit warmer which will pair better with the brightish RTiAs. Plus, the audessey calibration in the Marantz is FAR superior to the YPAO in the yamaha.

If it was 1060 vs. 5012 it would be much closer, but I would still vote marantz for the same two reasons...

Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant

Ditto, although I think you'd be happy with either. Just more happy with the Marantz.

I have two SR5010 and like them. These do come with Audyssey XT which can be a pain sometime to setup. XT32 is great, For the money Marantz should have put Audyssey XT32 on.

I'd also look at Denon AVR-X3300W or AVR-X3400X, both are in your price range and come with Audyssey XT32. The guy I sold my RTi8/RTi4/CSI5 to has the 3300W and loves it.

Love my Denon AVR-X3300W. Calibration with XT32 works great as well. Highly recommend the Denon

OK, so good options are Marantz SR5012 and Denon X3300W, but the Denon doesn't have Dolby vision. Is this a deal breaker?
Also, what's the difference between W series and H series in Denon's world? Is Denon X3400H a good option as well ($100 more than X3300W, but support Dolby vision)

The H indicates support for Denon's HEOS, a pretty decent streaming solution that can be expanded thought your home. Otherwise, similar. 3300 is 2016, 3400 is 2017. No 3500 yet, but it can probably be predicted.

Two things that bother me about my Marantz SR5010.

    1. Audyssey XT. This calibration program SUCKS! The SR50XX cost more than the Denon 3 series but come with a sub par calibration program. I've setup a few AVR with XT32 and wow so much better and easy, no tweaking required.
    2. That darn small porthole display. Unless the TV is on there is no way to see it from more than 5' away.

On the plus side the SR5010 once dialed in is awesome.

Knowing what I know now I would have gotten the Denon or a SR60XX with Audyssey XT32

I also really like denons. I owned a 23XX something or other and it was pretty sweet, and my current AVR-X4200w is awesome, so if the 30XX series has better calibration, I say go for it...

Well if it’s less than $100, at that price I would go for the newest...

Both of those are Dolby vision capable. I would agree for an extra 100 dollars get the newest. I came from Sony to the Denon and love the Denom

Get the 3400. HEOS is a nice option if that interests you. Download the HEOS app to see what it does.

I personally would buy a square trade warranty as I have had good experience with them. But others experience may be different...

Arghhh................I was almost ready to pull the trigger on the X3400H, but I just found out it might be too deep for my cabinet. My current receiver not working anymore, I went to Costco and got a TSR-7810 "to wait", and this one is 14"-7/8. It's already a tight fit. And the Denon is deeper than that (15" 3/8) !!!!!
