I used to work at a Portillo's while in High School back in Chicago. Stumbled across this rather uniquely decorated one in Rolling Meadows this weekend.

    My ex-mother-in-law grew up in Chicago, and my ex was born there, but they moved to Wisconsin in the 60s. Her mother was always talking about visiting friends and relatives back in Chicago and getting Italian beef. HAHAHAHAHA

    My x-wifes cousins.....and Johnny's beef is better. :) He sold that chain not too long ago for a cool Billion. His brother, Frank Portillo, used to own Browns Chicken. Worked for him for 17 years from high school on.

    I did not know that....Browns Chicken rocks, or did when I lived up there and worked at O'Hare.
    How bout Jays Beef...hot, wet, with cheese. Man the food down here sucks.

    Love the Italian beef sandwiches...hot, dipped (sometimes just wet)and with cheese. Sometimes I the fall and winter I'll cook my own and buy some good loaves and bring it all in to work for the guys to pig out. It's good, but, not quite the real thing.

    Some of the frozen Italian beef like buona beef frozen isnt bad.

    Down here in Hazard County, GA.
    The good thing about not having access to Portillos and all those great pizza joints is the health aspect. We figured out a pretty good homemade beef recipe....while tasty Portillos is ultra unhealthy.

    I ate at that location a couple of times when I used to date a girl that lived out in that area. Pretty cool place!

    1840 – The sandwich was introduced to America by Englishwoman Elizabeth Leslie (1787-1858). In her cookbook, Directions for Cookery, she has a recipe for ham sandwiches that she suggested as a main dish:

    Ham Sandwiches – Cut some thin slices of bread very neatly, having slightly buttered them; and, if your choose, spread on a very little mustard. Have ready some very thin slices of cold boiled ham, and lay one between two slices of bread. You may either roll them up, or lay them flat on the plates. They are used at supper or at luncheon.

    Great news for us, soon to be Iowa's first Portillos, no more driving to DeKalb or Rockford, or Chicago when me and the Wife have a hankering for some Portillos, heck with Costco coming and Portillos, and a couple of new brew pubs were going big time. I think it helps that the CEO of this fine establishment grew up in this area that might of helped.

    Portillo's was sold to a large conglomerate about 5-6 years ago. Dick Portillo was supposed to stay on as director for some time to make sure the "brand" didn't change and was consistent, as they are now taking the franchise National.

    Always stopped at the one in Shaumburg, IL when traveling/shopping in the area (from Rockford, IL) many years ago. Then one opened in DeKalb, IL when I actually was commuting and working in Sycamore around 2002-2003.

    Now we have one in Rockford as of about a year and 1/2 ago. Good stuff, and as far as I can tell it's the same as it's always been.

    Of course in the Chicago area people will always tell you there are better beef and hot dog places. May be true, but Portillo's is still excellent, and here after a year and half, every lunch time from 11-2 and dinner time 5-8, the 2 lane drive thru is packed with cars around the building into the parking lot as well as a bustling inside.

    A success here for sure!! I am amazed at how many people work the food lines. They must have 12-15 people in the food area and about 4-5 cashiers inside and 4-5 runners in the drive thru taking orders out in the line and transmitting it to the kitchen so it's ready when you get to the pick up window. Quite an efficient operation to move so much consistently good food. And it's reasonably priced considering it's fresh and looking at all the labor employed to get it out to the customers. Any other National franchise except Chik-a Filet has like 1 or 2 cashiers and 2-3 people in the kitchen.

    Ironically, now that we have one here, I don't eat there as much.....lol. But I do love their beef and Chicago hot-dogs!
