Thinking about upgrading my RX-A720

I don't have near the knowledge base as 99% of you in this forum so I thought I would ask for some opinions.

I recently bought a pair of S55's and a S30 that are in a room that is 16 ft wide and 16.5 deep. I also have one PSW 505. I don't have the room for a surround setup in this house so I will always be running 3.1 setup, maybe moving to a 3.1.2 sometime in the future.

I have thought about moving up to a refurnished 2070 or 3060. My listening mix is 40% music and 60% TV and movies. Would I gain much from moving up to a better AVR?

We may be moving in 5 years or so and if we do I will look for a house that has a room I can run a surround setup in.

Yamaha RX-A2070, Musical Fidelity M6si integrated amp, Benchmark Dac1, Bluesound NODE 2i, Audiolab 6000CDT CD Transport, Parasound Zphono USB Phono Preamp, Fluance RT85, Ortofon 2M Bronze, Polk L600's, L400, L900's, RC80i's, SVS 3000 Micro, Audioquest Interconnects and Digital Cables, Nordost Silver Shadow Digital Cable, Cullen Gold and Crossover Series Power Cables, Douglas Connection Alpha 12AWG OCC Speaker Cables, Douglas Connection Alpha Analog Interconnect Cables, Douglas Connection Alpha 11 OCC Custom Power Cable, Signal Power Cable, Furman PL-8C 15 Power Conditioner, Sony 65" 900F, Sony UBP-X700, Fios, Apple TV 4K, Audioquest Chocolate HDMI Cables.

I would guess that the 2070/3060 would sound much better (for music at least) just because they are better units. They will also probably have a better power supply than your cheaper one, so they may push a little more power, a slightly lower impedance, run cooler, etc. I use daily my old Yamaha RX-v665 for 2 channel, then 2.1, then 3.1 for a long time, and it sounded really good if I recall. Not as good as my Technics I have now for straight 2 channel music, but still, really good. I still have it running today actually on some Boston CR75s. I imagine for movies it will probably be better, but not as drastically as for music.
I would say that it is probably worth the move. But do remember that if those receivers are not as high resolution as your current one, then the video quality may take a hit.
Keep in mind I don’t know a ton about any of the receivers on your list, other than their place in the food chain, and audio related specs. I’ve never listened to any of them, although I’ve heard they sound quite good.

The only reason I could see to upgrade any reciever, running a 3.1 set up is for newer sound codex or 4K capabilities.
I think that AVR has most of the current sound decoding programs.

Don’t think it has pre-outs, so if you want to add an amp in the future, that would be reason enough. Don’t really think it would be worth it to upgrade to a newer AVR for music. I don’t think the improvement would justify the cost, strictly using the AVR, without an amp.

There is a vast difference going from the lower to the higher end Yamahas. You should definitely notice an improvement. Plenty of power in the 2070 or 3060, and you shouldn't need an amp to run those 3 speakers with an AVR of that caliber.

    Thanks for the input.

I'm trying to sell the 720 right now and waiting to see if the prices go down with the new models coming out.

Really if you don’t need the extra channels, and it sounds like you don’t, go for the 1000 series.

I agree. The 1000 series sound great, have more power and preouts. You don’t need the extra channels or power so the 2000 series would be a waste of money...

I'm an old guy and we live in a 2 story house right now, but we will move to a one story probably within 5 years. I will be looking for a house then where I can set up a surround system so I want to get something that I don't have to upgrade later.

I understand where you are coming from, but chances are in five years you will need to upgrade. 8K (16, 24???) and who knows what audio codecs will be the standard in 5 years lol...

And besides, if you are just looking to upgrade to 5.1.2, then the 1000 series will do that for you.

I agree with the above and get an RX-A10XX AVR. S55 and an S30 don't need that much power to sound good. In the future if more power/channels are needed then you can add an amp to the system.

In my experience, yes, the most improvement in sound starts with the 10xx series.

The reason I was considering going higher than a 1070 is I can get a 2060 for an additional $100.00 at accessories4less or a 2070 or 3060 for an additional $250.

It's your money. If it was me I would save the $100, not much difference is sound quality once you go above the 10XX AVR.

The additional $250 is enough for (or most of) a good B&K or Parasound amplifier.

It all depends on what you want and can afford. I think there ARE incremental, but noticeable, improvements as you go up the line. For me, I moved from 1010 to 2040, several years ago, mostly for the use of additional channels.

So is accessories4less safe to buy from?

Any sites any of you would suggest for a new one at a good price?

Well I just ordered an RX-A2070 from them as I sold my RX-A720.

Now if I can just get my house put back together as major foundation work in the den area where my setup goes. New wood floors next week to replace the ones they had to go thru to put the new piers in.

Hurts me to think of what I could have used all of that money for. Oh well, the joys of owning a home.
