    It's a wonder to me why that lava mound beside the spurting lava isn't melting anymore. The red-hot lava is all around it and spurting lava is falling on it a lot!! I hear a rooster and birds singing like it's just another day on the Island. :)

    I learned a new word today. Laze. When lava flows into the ocean. See below.

    Lava has crossed Highway 137 at the 13-mile marker and has entered the ocean, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense. A second lava flow is about 437 yards from the highway.

    Highway 137 is closed between Kamaili Road and Pohoiki Road. Kamaili Road is closed between Highways 130 and 137.

    Residents in the area have been evacuated and the public is asked to stay out of the area, Civil Defense officials said.

    The lava has entered the ocean and the public should be aware of the laze hazard and stay away from any ocean plume, they said.

    Laze is formed when hot lava hits the ocean sending hydrochloric acid and steam with fine glass particles into the air.Health hazards of laze include lung, eye and skin irritation. The laze plume travels with the wind and can change direction without warning, according to Civil Defense.

    I can't even imagine that type of natural disaster. The live feed is cool, but reading about it the folks there say the noise is incredible. I lived in Central CA for a few years and brush fires are common, but lava bombs! OMG! :smile:

    A very common mineral especially around volcanos...not far from where the flows are going into the ocean is a beautiful green sand beach which is just olivine and some black sand, many black sand beaches on this coast and there is even a red sand beach down Hana way on Maui.....

    Cool! A green glass/sand beach. I'd like a big jar of that.

    My wife made some beach sand candle centerpieces for a high school reunion years back. She bought about 10 med./big glass tulip bowls and put the local beach sand in them. She then put tea lite candles in the center, on the sand. Everybody who wanted one got one. We still have ours.

    But to have a green sand one, how cool!
