Need some quick advise guys.

I am looking at a used 2009 BMW X5 3.0 - original owner, good car fax, single owner - 48,818 miles. Anyone have a reason I shouldn't buy it??

Planning to meet the owner Friday morning.

So, need info quickly.

Thanks in advance.

Well, I could say it's a BMW and that's reason enough to avoid it, but that vintage has dash display issues and coil packs start to fail around now (if one goes down, replace them all at the same time). If the headlamp lenses are crappy looking, do not try to polish them, it doesn't go well. Replace or clean and clear coat.

Then there's the offset rubber and it's associated cost.

I could come up with more but, meh...

On the plus side, it's a BMW. They do ride nice, quiet and have better than average power.

I wouldn't look twice at a BMW. Here in L.A., it seems everyone has one, and their recent reliability has not been the best. there is so much waiting to break on it that it will shock you.

But I drive a Jag, so my advice should be taken with a grain of sea salt.

FMV from my area probably wouldn't translate well for you. Have you checked for local comps?

    I absolutely loved driving my 2008 535xi.
I absolutely hated my maintenance shop options.
I absolutely hated that every problem required 10 more steps to solve than a "normal" car.
Case in point, the battery. Sure, you can buy a "normal" battery at Autozone or what have you. But then there is the 1 service hour for the dealer to "reset" the computer so that the charging system doesn't kill your shiny new battery.
The premise is, as the battery ages, the computer adjusts how the battery is recharged so as to prolong the life of the battery.

Even something as simple as the single frame wipers were a pain in the arse. You had to get the actual BMW branded Bosch wipers or the aftermarket options would hit the hood edge when they went to full rest. And of course, BMW charged about 200% more than the aftermarket models.

The 535 has something like 53 different computers. All potential failure points along with all of the associated systems.

I had Jag charge me (actually the shop that redid my headliner) 247.00 to replace a blown fuse.

Overheard BMW owners conversation "You know how they fall apart after five years" "yeah you got to buy another before that" I dunno but it sounded pretty stoopid to me. I guess if you are made of money they are nice. I had a few Mercedes but I always got rid of them when the warranty was about up. Yeah that was pretty stoopid too. At any rate I found that you dont get your monies worth unless you can drive em at close to 100 mph otherwise they are pretty much just another car. But 100 mph never felt so slow!

Probably 10,000 or so a year. Certainly not made of money.

Wife has been gone since last September, no plans to let her come back.

Was going to let my 17 year old daughter use it.

    She lives with me.

    Land cruiser.... For you.

Your daughter can buy and destroy her own car.
Or if you're set on getting one for her, get something with a manual transmission.

I work on these things daily, Love driving them, hate fixing them. The X5 is the worst BMW there is. JUNK! The cars aren’t so bad, but high maintenance. Just did 6 injectors on a 335i today. 480$ per injector x6, not including labor, 156,000kms on that guy.

Unfortunately their interiors are kind of bland unless you want to spend big money on the good stuff...... M series. Really love the inline six twinturbos, absolutely awesome engine, except that they get this wastegate flap rattle around 120,000 km’s, then the underboost faults come after that, then 2 new turbos..did I mention these things piss oil? Seriously it’s ridiculous.

I had a used 740iL with about that many miles. Impeccably cared for. Over the 2 years I owned it I spend $5K fixing stuff. I called it the "$800 wonder" because it cost at least that much to fix it every time I took it in.
If I was looking at a car like that I'd take an Audi Q5 10 out of 10 chances.
