SDA 1c's have finally escaped from the closet !

Options
Hi everyone!
Longtime lurker here .... great place !

Finally talked the wife into letting me use the SDA's in the bedroom ....
They've been banished to the closet for the last 15 years ...
I bought them new in '88 ....

Couple of questions please ...

I assume they will need some attention....
Besides the internal mods - what would you recommend first and in what order ?

Between 4 new rdo 194 tweeters and crossover rebuilds from westmassguy?
Keeping in mind they will be doing mostly low volume listening in the bedroom ....
Which of the crossover rebuilds would u recommend between his 4 options ?
Cost is an issue ..... I know the tweets are a must , so that's a given expense ...
Which crossover service will do ? Not looking to make these world class speakers - they'll be in the bedroom ....

Oh , they presently work fine and sound good and are in mint condition .... I'm sure they sounded better when they were new ....

So question is - tweeters first or crossovers first ... and which crossovers?
Gonna do it in 2 phases ....

Equipment I have on hand is - B&K ex-442 amp ( original owner ) , a new Parasound A21 amp ,
And a PS audio 4.6 preamp (original owner) .... streaming duty is through a Yamaha wxc-50 ....

Thank you in advance !

Welcome to CP! I'm in the middle of a 1C upgrade. Just got my XO's back from @westmassguy . He does great work!

Tweeters are easy to replace and inexpensive.

    Have fun!

I would think the XO should be first, it will also show the greatest improvement. The RDOs will be the fine tuning. And don't forget to reseal and hurricane nuts.

Definitely tweets first. Crossovers will make a big improvement but are bigger budget. I went with the Dayton low pass, sonicap high pass and the sub- bass inductor upgrade. Won't be able to report on that until next week... The RDO's were WAY nice. Not harsh or fatiguing like the stock tweeters both at low and high volume.

i upgraded the tweeters in my 1c's & they can be used in new upgraded crossovers when budget is there. I then put spikes on them & noticed a much bigger difference right off. Bass was amazing & the overall sound they produced seemed to be more controlled. Im not good at explaining. I had planned on doing crossovers, but never happened. Wonderful speaker

Nice to hear (pun intended)@boston1450 ! I did the same on my 2B's that I karma'd out not to recently.

    Couple things:
Did you re-use the original gaskets? Or make new ones?

Use washers at the attachment points to compensate for material thickness differences when compared to the old SL2000's? See below:

I installed Larry's rings on tweeters n woofers n passive & used original gaskets that were on all listed above Because they were still good. Unless its damaged-reuse it OR use the stuff they recommend here. I cant remember what its called. (Armacell-Armaflex) You know the stuff :)

That's cool. How about the washers on the new tweeters? I wouldn't have noticed until i read the thread about his RDO-194's rattling. Very easy, I believe I used #10 washer, super glued in place.

This is a new problem. It wasn't needed on the older batches of rdo194

    Thanks smallies!
Think I’ll get the crossovers done by DHS and see how they sound ....
Got the treble cranked up pretty high now and it’s still not enough - bedroom is carpeted , drapes etc .... not exactly a “lively” room - and I’ve been a airline pilot for 30 years , so my high freq hearing isn’t what it used to be ......
