I have a pair of crappy old Polks and some old tube amps that will dance all over them and still leave 200k in your kids college fund.
The Gear... Carver "Statement" Mono-blocks, Mcintosh C2300 Arcam AVR20, Oppo UDP-203 4K Blu-ray player, Sony XBR70x850B 4k, Polk Audio Legend L800 with height modules, L400 Center Channel Polk audio AB800 "in-wall" surrounds. Marantz MM7025 stereo amp. Simaudio Moon 680d DSD

Yeah I don’t play at this level... this guy is a little deep in the pockets.

He just bought the Levinson 536 amps and replacing his Mcintosh 601. Now auditioning the preamp 526. A cool 50,000.

I know one thing for sure, I’m not unloading 50k anytime for music reproduction with 2 components. I’m cheap as heck

So, the meet concluded. My friend is very happy with the Levinsons that he just purchased (326 pre and 325 monoblocks and Kimber Silver USB cable, I think even with discount it was north of $45K). Obviously the ML rep and the dealer were egging him on to keep buying, they pulled out some top of the line Kimber Select Speaker wire (silver like my Wels) and were pushing him to buy it, it was $35,000.

I pulled my buddy aside after the demo, I told him it was not worth it and not to buy it. I told him, I have the Wels and I listen to it every day, and I can tell you "no cable on Earth is worth $30,000+). I felt like I just needed to be the voice of reason.

Which is kind of funny, when I have to be the voice of reason - that's very worrisome situation.

But, it was fun and it was cool to play with all that gear. My head begun to spin as we just kept switching components and wires.

I am not the biggest Wilson fan, the demo did not turn me yet.

I still think there are things my system does that are better, but for sure there were things that his system did better than mine.

    1. Dynamics - Wilsons really are capable of loud passages.
    2. Easy to listen to. Not very much different to Sonus Fabers that I've heard.
    3. Personalizable, those rakes and adjustments really tune the spot to your "head" position.

Next group meet, I think we are visiting the biggest and baddest system of the group. Brian has a dedicated room that makes ours look like a hello kitty boombox. He runs a full Vivaldi stack with Boulder 2110 preamp and 3060 stereo. Will be fun to learn more.

    Thanks for reading.

Everything from audiophile stuff to jazz to hip hop.

I think sound is so personal and we all hear differently. I would say my system is more intimate than his but I have not heard dynamics like that in a long time.

Beauty about these meet ups, you learn or appreciate something new each time...

Wilson and Kimber are both Utah companies so I see a lot of their stuff.
I like being able to go see and be “Told” what we are missing. Lol
I did like this setup with D’Agostino amps. Very clean and dynamic. I was told to listen as long as I liked. Cool salesman.
The way I look at it you are only getting incremental increases in sound quality once you spend to a certain point. I don’t think it’s 4 times better then the system he had in the next room at 1/4 the price.
But for the money ain’t a thing crowd go ahead.

Also, before I spend tons of cash on gear (at least THAT KINDA CASH), I'd want to make sure my room was acoustically treated, and if needed reconfigured (and even tore down and rebuilt) to get the most of out any speakers I put in there.....
