Newby 7 Series Question

New here to the Polk forum. Been over on the Klipsch side of the force for a few years now. But I'm becoming more and more enthralled with some of the Vintage Polks lately. I've got the chance to pick up a pair of either 7B's for $125 or 7C's for $120. Neither have had any recaps or upgrades. The 7B's look like the tweeter is in upside down?? Did they assemble them with the angled tweeter wires both ways? Both pairs seem in decent shape. I've just got a Rega Brio amp w/a Pro-ject Acryl platter & Cambridge CD player. Not happy with my Klipsch RVX54's w/ a sub for real music. They're great for Home Theater but I'm wanting to do some critical music listening now. I realize this question has been rehashed often but I don't have room for both sets (my wife doesn't understand why I already have 4 pairs of speakers stored in the garage} and want to make 1 of them my mains for a while. Is there that much difference between the 7B's & 7C's? Appreciate the knowledge on these forums and I look to the experienced listeners always for their input. Also, would like to learn more about recapping or upgrading which ever pair I end up with. Thanks

Yes, except that the wires angle up not down

No big deal, just means someone pulled the tweets for some reason. Make sure the box passes the leak down test and you're good to go.

Leak down test = Gently push the passive radiator in and hold it. The 6.5 inch driver should pop up and then slowly sink back in, in approx 5 seconds or so.

They use passive radiators for the bass, so the cabinet needs to be sealed well. Press the mid-driver in lightly and hold it, the pressure inside the cabinet should make the passive move outward and then slowly return to position after a few seconds. It means you have a good seal and the bass should be good.

When you press the mid-driver in, also note if it moves smoothly and there's no scratchy feel to it. Just be sure not to press too hard, you can puncture the cone.
  • I don't recommend touching or pressing on the mid woofers, instead as advised press on the center of the passive. The mids are coated with a tacky substance and could be marred by touching them.

Gently press on the passive driver (large one) and hold it there. Watch the mid woofer. It should push out and hold it's position for 3 seconds before slowly dropping back into position.

Sounds simple enough. I recall being threatened within an inch of my life if i ever touched those little round things again on my dads old Phillips console. Is there much difference between the 7b's & c's. I've read some pretty nice reviews on the c's but not much on the b's.
