Now thinking I might want upward firing speakers for overhead to bounce the sound.

Thoughts on using SVS PRIME Elevations? Easier to mount than cutting holes in the ceiling.

I'd say give them a try. Free shipping both ways if you don't like them. Timbre matching surrounds isn't nearly as important as the front 3.

Thanks Ken, I was hoping that would be the case.

    Somewhat related...

I remember reading somewhere that many of the ATMOS mixing studios use Revel speakers. A few of the in wall models are supposed to be heavily used in the industry for height speakers.

Just thought I would share. IMO, it would be wise to see how well the up firing speakers work first. Even if one were to run wires themselves, it would be a job to wire a ceiling.

Thanks WLDock. I can easily wire above my room. I ran conduit in the walls and up to the attic behind my system. I read lots of conflicting views on up firing. What I might try is putting ceiling speakers in boxes and firing them up before getting brave and cutting. I wonder how in ceiling speakers can sound the same with the endless options for how much space they might find behind the sheetrock.

True. There are so many dynamics that could come into play. If it's an exterior ceiling, the insulation may affect it, particularly if it is installed just above the sheetrock of the listening room ceiling. There may be a second story floor system above the ceiling joists. It may be an open space with closed-cell foam sprayed onto the bottom of the room system above.
