Noob's intro to HiFi forum lingo

Ok, I've been around audio (pro) for a while, but since joining here, I've come to realize that there's a new language I need to learn.

If someone would be so kind, could you define or break down the more common short hand, acronyms, or slang so that I might follow the threads with better understanding? Thanks so much.

    It would be easier if you told us what words/slang you are having trouble with.

    Mostly the acronyms... Like oppo

    I'm guilty of using alot of slang and acronyms in the Festiva forum and having to define or break them down for noobs there or for those over seas who use different words for the same part.

    Oh, I saw that word being slung around like it was a component, not company. Ok, so that answers that.

    I figured IC can be either interconnect or integrated circuit depending on context. TT is turn table. Are there others that y'all can think of?

    I figured this thread might help other noobs like me so if a good list can be compiled, it might be stickie worthy.

    Yes. The English language allows that flexibility. That is one reason why it is a difficult second language.

    @mikeyb128 that's a considerable list!

    But @Nightfall, you've got the idea I was after.

    And maybe I should add to the list: nicknames... things like Klipsch horns... I know within the context, the writer is referring to a specific model or series, but when I see that all I can picture is the actual component, and Google is almost worthless for getting the intended image.

    I'm a total noob, but dang it!, I want to learn.

    BYSB - blows your sack back (credit: tonyb)

    This is one you have to experience to fully understand. Otherwise, it's like trying to describe a color. Plus, that conversation just gets weird, talking about the specifics of sack blowing, ripple effect, sustain, etc.

    You'll know it when it happens, or so I hear. I've just taken to BYSB Emulation with a couple of big fans with proper toe-in, but I don't think it's the same.

    YMMV? The first M is what gets me? Usually there's an R in that position.

    DAC = digital analog converter
    Pre/pro = preamp processor
