AVR Source Switching problem

Whenever I turn on my Marantz 1403 AVR to watch TV, I have to turn on the Cable box ( DIRECTV) & wait till my TV fully turns on before I turn on then AVR. If I don't do it in that order, I won't have sound and/or picture & I have to reset the AVR to correct this. I have not had this problem with any other AVR. I'm not sure if this AVR operates differently or if I have a faulty one. I bought it used so not sure if the previous owner blew something out or if this is normal. No problems anywhere else on the unit. The AVR does not usually do this in cd play, although i have had to restart it when switching over to play CDs.
So I'm asking, is this normal? Not a big deal, just feels like I'm doing it wrong everytime I turn the #*@% thing on.

No, it's not normal. That said, have you read the manual and made sure all your settings are correct ?

Depending on what type of HDMI cable you're using (assuming that's the issue, it happened with my Denon 3312ci on occasion), maybe try upgrading that?
I went with an Audioquest Cinnamon* cable and haven't had a problem since

Possible, an out of date HDMI cable will create handshake issues. Make sure you have a current HDMI series of cable. There were many different iterations, the older ones won't work correctly with modern gear.

^^^ Heard ya the first time...

LOL, not just older, the one I originally had in the mix was a bottom-rung
HDMI from monoprice, IIRC I think the 6' was about $4.99? The AQ was a very
noticeable step up in both PQ & SQ.

I have AQ cinnamon too. Both connecting the cable box to the amp & amp to the tv. I'm assuming they are up to date, as they are rather new but I will check into that. This sounds like the most logical solution. Thanks guys!

If they are fairly new, I think you're ok with the AQ. It was just the first (easiest) thing to suggest for you to try.
Per @tonyb, I agree there's an issue with the "handshake", I believe it can have something to do with the HDMI circuit board in the AVR?
