New HSU Sub

Hello,

A little history first,

My first HSU is/was a STF2, It matched my main speakers at the time RTi4. I just replaced the amp after 10+ years and it still rocking. It now matches my nes S20 just as well.

When I got the RTi8's the STF2 sounded a little lacking or just not able to keep up the the RTi8. So I got the VTF2-MK3.

Now I have a nice awesome new pair of S60 and it's the same thing all over again. I have ran Audyssey and the VTF2-MK3 seams just a little off, like not enough slam to keep up with the better speaker.

The VTF2-MK3 is a 250 watt down firing rear ported 12" sub.

I am thinking of going to a VTF3-MK5 600 watt front firing and ported 15" sub.

But then I looked at the spec's on the new VTF2-MK5. it's 350 watts front firing and ported 12" sub. 100 more watts than my current sub.

Is the VTF3 going to be overkill, if there is such a thing in bass.

Yes I was looking at a SVS SB13 but I do want to get an Oppo this year.

Money believe it or not is not going to be an issue for me on this one. Woodwork has been good.
When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

Buy the biggest and baddest one you can get. There isn't such thing as over kill with subs. I would rather turn down a sub because it was over kill, then have a sub that runs out of stream, or just barely does the job.

10 years... you got your monies worth, now go buy the big one.

May want to try adjusting the phase on the sub a little.

A VTF 3 wouldn't be overkill. Twenty VTF 3's may be pushing it a little.

    Thank guy's

Looks like VTF3 time :) I know there is no overkill when it comes to subs, even that $10k JL audio thing would work.

It's a rare moment for me to have spare cash and go for the better equipment. Living in SoCal and working for an employer who does not give pay increases makes me a little shy on spending the extra $250. "F" it this time I have the spare cash coming in, wife does not know about it. Stars are lined up for the VTF3 on May 5.

Maybe it will also help slam the mother in-law out the door.

Did adjust the sub, I ran Audyssey and adjusted the sub volume till audyssey matched the level of the fronts to the sub. Still sounds great, might just be that little green man inside my head saying "new speakers new sub" :)

Kind of funny how it works, I got the new speakers and I am happy. at the time of the new speakers there was no way in the world I was going to be able to afford a new sub. Now almost out of the clear blue sky I have funding for the sub... best part is the wife won't know about it till it's too late.

I might even take a day off and do a road trip to HSU. It's a 90 minute drive without traffic. Most of the Opps on CL are in Orange County, might be worth the 2 for 1 trip. HSU said for my 3rd sub I get 10% off + I would not have to pay shipping then. I might just have enough left over for a used BDP-93.

yep you could get a 93 for a few dollars more and it is a much more stable player. They have had a lot of troubles with the 83 I have read.

However this one was recently serviced, which should mean the bad tray (the main issue troubling the player IIRC) has been corrected......

I saw that one, BDP-83 does not have Netflix, neither does the new 203. So fo me it's either the 93 or 103. There are a couple of 93 in OC right now. I have to just wait for the funds next week.

Is Netflix really that big of a deal to have on a player? Seems like Netflix is pre loaded on everything these days. Netflix is super slow on the 93 in my opinion.

For me yes Netflix on the player is a must. My wife has a hard enough time. Don't need to toss is a Roku on her. The Panasonic I picked up back in December is pretty sweet. I am hard wired into my network so I get the full bandwidth for my streaming needs. Stranger Things even had the Atmos soundtrack to it.

Back to the sub, unless something changes my mind the little green man and I will get the VTF3-MK5.

Hard wired on the 93 and still slow. My 105 was great and on wifi. I'm guessing the 103 will be the same. Get a 103, new wife, or roku. The roku is easy and soooo cheap. I could take back the bottles and afford a roku, plug one right into my receiver.

I too agree with Mikey "Get a 103, new wife". well at least the 103. I will keep an eye out for a 103.

Changing technology in this house is more gray hair for me. Main reason for Netflix on the player is that is where the receiver input is set. If my wife or her mother go to watch Netflix, it's turn on the TV switch to HDMI2 (they screw this up 1/2 the time) turn on BD player. If the receiver is not on BD it OMG help the TV is broken. Heck this morning mother in law was saying the TV is broken. It was on HDMI 2. Trying to teach these two how to use new technology is impossible, maybe electro shock wouldn't even do it. Last thing I need is these two pushing buttons on the receiver till it works.

I have looked at Roku, only problem is it won't play ISO. I have a NAS with TB of ISO that is taken care of by my WD Live.

Maybe the VTF3-MK5 will slam the two of these out the door.....

Dude, @mrloren get a Logitech harmony remote. It will solve all these problems and then it won't matter which source is supplying what. You set up a macro called "watch Netflix", wifey or MIL push button, and they are off to the races...

Slight pain, but MakeMKV (free program) will convert ISO to MKV.... because I used it to do just that.

Went through two of those already. Wife and MIL are totally non tech friendly. When I am done watching a movie I have to make sure the AVR is back to BD and the change the TV to HDMI1/Cable box. When my wife watches her Netflix she could always just hit the Netflix button on the TV remote but noooo she has to go through the BD player.

My wife has a masters degree in bio but when it comes to new tech around the house I gave up no matter how simple it is.

Funny thing is when it comes to their phones they are all over it... maybe they are just trying to drive me nuts.

over 1000 ISO, VIDCODER takes about 7 minutes each. It is something I will need to do, I don't think my WD live hub will last forever.

oh mother in law could program a VCR, had thousands of soap's recorded. She would set 3 VCR to record her soaps and then watch them 3 times. Last time she moved out I tossed them all. Seriously it was a dumpster full. bummer she can't figure anything else in life out...

    So back on topic.

After working in the yard and thinking of all the nice input, I now think I have it figured out. Well maybe.

Sub WILL be VTF3-MK5 $850 + or - to the door.

For the Oppo I was looking at the Sony UDP or something on the upper end from other manufactures. A Used Oppo is between $250 to $350 for a BDP-93. If it can be found a BDP-103 is $350 and up... and how many hours of playing time do these have on them? A new UDP-203 is $550. What the heck I will get the UDP-203...

I will try the Roko https://www.costco.com/Roku-Premiere-Plus-HDR-4K-Ultra-HD-Streaming-Player-Bundle.product.100320945.html it's $95 worth a shot. if I don't like it Costco will let me take it back. NVIDIA has a media player that is in the $200 range. If the wife can't figure out how to hit the Netflix button too bad. It will take a few weeks to convert all of my ISO to MKV.

So getting this will blow my little side cash.. I will need to unload my VTF2-MK3 quick. What would be a fair asking price? I was thinking $200, or should I ask for more?

This forum will burn a wallet up quick.

don't know how much is 4K, don't care too much either. My TV is 1080p and getting another is out of the question unless mother in law kills it. She keeps turning it on then off.

Do this! I set my hub at the back of the room and it blasts IR all over the room. Turns everything on in sequence for my girl friend. I can even upload nice color pictures for each activity, which helps with kids, wives, and mom in laws.

I gave up trying with those two. Give them their cell phones and they have a blast, change remotes on them and have the month headache. The last Harmony I had I tossed it after my wife woke me up in the middle of the night because she could not get Netflix working. I think they do it just to piss me off.
