would you want to hear either of the above? ;)

The CS-99s, truth be told... I cannot ever recall hearing. They may be fine. If nothing else, they're probably pretty sensitive -- and I suspect something like a Dynaco ST-35 (pp EL84 @ about 12 to 14 wpc) would make the most of them.

This being said, I don't want discourage the OP :) He's got 'em and can see what they'll do. All I have is half-fast ;) opinions.

I would like to check out some of the earlier, real Pioneer stuff. I had some CS-9900 as my first set of speakers I picked up second hand from a guy when I was a kid in the Air Force. I thought they were pretty serious at the time. Ha, I imagine they'd be considered good "party speakers" by today's standards. Right up there with CV's, maybe, even.

I remember stumbling across those CS-99's, I think, in some reading when I was going through my vintage phase. Other than nothing, I know nothing.

I have two pair of Pioneer branded loudspeakers -- truth be told, they're both decent.

The Project 100A three ways don't quite count. They were cheap, US designed and made (in those days, due to soaring energy costs & rampant inflation, it just didn't make sense to ship large, essentially hollow boxes from Asia to the US unless they were expensive hollow boxes). Still, surprsingly decent sounding, despite a really odd driver complement (cone tweeter & dome MR).

The other pair are rather more serious - HPM-1100s. the HPM(F) tweeter is pretty much a waste of space, and it's kind of surprising to see three cone drivers (Pioneer was still aping the JBL L-100, I suppose) - but, if nothing else, they're very well made drivers.

Again, these are fairly decent sounding loudspeakers.

  • One of my roommates in the mid-70's had a set of the CS-99's. I wouldn't necessarily call them party speaker in the same category as Cerwin Vegas, but my oh my, did Led Zeppelin and Alan Parsons Project sound ever so fine !

......well, on 2nd thought, one could put them in the category of party speakers. But GOOD party speakers. :)
