Regardless of price, that 83's drive IS going to fail. You'd be much better seeking out a 93. $235 is more in line though.

Oppo has been graciously been fixing these for free (even those like mine that were out of warranty) and shipping them back via FedEx on their nickel.

    I know. I mentioned that:

The optical drive just fails to work. I've read of some units having it replaced 3x. You might be lucky and got a well-made one. The 83/83SE are the only two that had this issue AFAIK. Later models were redesigned and use a different drive.

If it does happen, Oppo has been excellent at fixing these at no cost to the users. Reach out to them and see what they can do if/when it fails. It's just a headache to be out of your BDP for a few weeks while they repair it.

I still wouldn't get it just for the headache of shipping/temp. loss of player/etc. If you already have one, its great customer support. If you don't, I don't know why you'd want to have to rely on that customer support.
It may be a cheaper way of getting an Oppo and their excellent CS - make a lower offer out of the drive concern.

Oppo is still issuing f/w fixes for the 83 and are always prompt, courteous and professional.

Good luck with that from say Pioneer, Samsung, Yamaha, etc as you navigate a painfully unresponsive CS morass of confusion & frustration.

Anyone familiar with one of these? A Dual 731Q turntable. Was pretty pricey in 1980-81. $700.00+. Low mass arm, used a special cartridge. http://omaha.craigslist.org/ele/5094413018.html

Does anyone here own this model (HSU Research VTF-2 MK4) and how does it compare to an equivalent model by SVS? Is one of the two brands better than the other? I've been keeping an eye out for a used local SVS sub.

    SDA 2b pair for $250.

Seller dropped the price again. I believe these were originally listed at $400 and have come down in $20-$25 increments for the past 3-4 months. Might eventually hit the $200 mark! No Affil...

Herm if I had to guess I'd say they (HSU, SVS) are both about on par with each other quality and sound wise. If you can get your ears on it and have the cash I'd say go for it.

He had 2 of them at one point and a bunch of other HT gear he was selling off that mostly sold.

Here is his other ad: http://louisville.craigslist.org/ele/5077765984.html

And I'm sure you found this but here are the manufacture specs: http://hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-2mk4.html

Honestly it would be a great starter and maybe even end sub for most small/medium rooms.

I'm now the proud owner of a HSU Research Powered Coffee Table! This thing is ridiculously large, like an end table. And this is one of the smallest they make. I have a spare car that is not much bigger than this sub. Now I'll be the first to admit, I have an ex-girlfriend who insists that I exaggerate about size. Of course, she's referring to when I go fishing.

I talked back and forth with the guy yesterday via email and expressed my concerns that once it changes hands the warranty is void and asked if he'd take $250. He said it's on sale now for $529 and that he'd let me have it for half ($265), but if someone offered him more before I picked it up, he'd sell it to them. As you probably realize, I got cheated out of 50 cents. I took off work during lunchtime and drove over to his house. 30 minute drive. Spent another 30 minutes playing around with the sub. The guy was super cool to deal with. If this had been a weekend and not a work day, I could have easily sat down and talked to this guy for a couple hours. He showed me what all the setting did and played various genres of music for me to hear. He even threw in a subwoofer cable. He purchased an entire HT system 3 months ago and ended up selling everything. He said it took up too much space. I think that means the wife vetoed the home theater. He said he recovered about half of what he spent. He had all the paperwork and accessories for it. This is the first subwoofer I've ever had a chance to hear that cost over $400. Thanks to EndersShadow for sharing this deal and msg for reassuring me that HSU makes nice subs.

FYI, it's pronounced "Shoe Research". I was pronouncing it H-S-U Research.

Now I'm going to go to B-E-D.

Thanks for the info msg, I too always thought it was H-S-U Research, lol. Always heard good things about HSU, but I think I did read on AVS they had a run on a few bad amps (can't remember which model) awhile back. I'm sure they were all covered with warranty, maybe someone can chime in on this?

hehe, yeah, I know it should be "shoe" and I still alternate between H-S-U and shoe, depending on the company I'm in, and whether it may make me look like a prententious pr!#k. I don't know, though. that could also be my driving gloves.
