I think they are done, Crutchfield says "discontinued". Get'em while you can.

I don't think there's going to be an upgrade. But I'd be real happy if I was proved wrong. Looks like the company has advised the vendors that they will be pulling back the sr's. The retailers are discounting and clearing inventory. If they are selling at $399, the official announcement is probably round the corner.

I think DEI is slowly pulling the plug on polk's car audio end. I don't think this end ever made money for Polk / DEI. I think Matt kept it going because for him it was probably an emotional decision. Now its just a financial one.

That said, there are two issues to be looked at.

    1. Sales of high end equipment is down world wide. (China and India are two exceptions :) ).

    2. 95% of people who buy high end gear, choose the biggest brand they can buy. Polk as a strategy built its brand on good products that gave vfm and word of mouth marketing. To keep the products vfm they cutback on marketing$$$ and brand building, which is a must at the top end.

Definitely! Madisound and Parts Express are great places to piece together a system.

I think Im going to build my system for next season from raw drivers from these guys.

off topic.. sorry.. but.. can anyone recommend a good metal dome to compliment my sr6500 tweets?

plan to put em low down near mid... helps imaging if u were wondering what i'm up to. my sr tweets are on a-pillars.

You're planning to run two pairs of tweets, the sr tweets on the a pillar and the metal ones near the mids? I doubt if that will give you better imaging.

The sr tweets are very directional. So I would play with the install angles first, before adding another pair of tweets. Get the far side tweet dead on axis to you. Then play with the angle of the near side one. Generally the near side tweet needs to be a bit more on axis than normal xfiring mode. This should solve your problem.

I just upgraded to sr's about 2 weeks back and am blown away by the tweet. Very sweet and airy. I always found metal tweets a bit harsh and bright. The other thing you need for accurate imaging is the ability to set at least 10-12 frequencies independently for left / right from your hu. Which hu are you running?

Madisound has a set of LPG aluminum tweeters that are very nice.

However, using a 2nd set of tweeters down low wont help your imaging, itll make it worse. Tonality will suffer as well.

I think you need the imprint kit to use all the tuning features on that deck. So yes that would be a nice start. Mac is the Alpine champ I'm sure he would be able to help you. Using the imprint setting should be your starting point. Often times what sounds best for your car and ears would be slightly different from what the imprint program dictates.

Did you try playing with the tweet angles? If your highs sound kind of hollow, then playing with the angles helps.
