FYI chutchfield has lowered their prices on some of the RTi line, 55's are $400/pair, but most of you already knew that. The others on sale are the 35's for $300, the 25's are $200, the 15's are going for $180. Towers: 2000i's are $1300, the 800i's are $700 and the 600i's are $500. :D

Is you can get a pair of RT55i for 399.95

And a CS400i is 399.95, now tell me center channel speakers are not over priced, I am not just slamming Polk, center channel speakers from most mfg are out of line, holding you hostage to buy the "timber matched" center for 2/3 the price or higher, the price of a similar set of bookshelf speakers. The "Special" on the 55's makes my point very clear.
Need more? pricing is per Crutchfield
    NHT AudioCenter-1 449.95
    NHT AudioCenter-1 599.95
this center costs 75% of the cost of a pair of speakers.

    Infinity Interlude™ IL25c
    Infinity Interlude™ IL10
This center costs 75% of the cost of a pair of speakers.

Am I alone in this fight for lower pricing on the Center Channel, who is with me.. Hello helllooo

...and as you pointed out, it isn't a problem that is exclusive to Polk.

My other gripe about the 400i is this (and there may be a valid reason):
How come the cabinet is vinyl and not wood like the rest of the RTi line? What up with that? Not a huge complaint but the speaker is 400 bones, is real wood too much to ask?

Why not real wood for the center channel speaker?

Well, not using veneer does mean a lower production cost, and this lower cost idea is probably based on the fact that the center channel speaker is most often hidden away inside a larger cabinet, paired up with a black or gray plastic television set, right near all the black-faced home theater components.

This is to say, it's not a towering prestige piece like the noble top-line Polk speakers of today and yesteryear.

I fully support real wood for all speaker enclosures. For that matter, my ideas of attractive component design are stuck in the 70's and 80's. I like wood component cabinets, and shiny faceplates with legible writing and easy-to-use knob controls.

I do wish that my Monitor 12's had the walnut veneer finish instead of the rosewood vinyl, which is starting to look a little tatty on the corners and edges. C'est la vie...

Oh... don't even get me started on the wood vs. vinyl thing.

I was at a specialty store and noticed the FX500's in WOOD. They were out-of stock though. Sigh.
I thought.. hmmm... not bad. I think I'll order a set from circuit city in case I want to upgrade to the FX1000 within a year. I pay my $500 and they place my order to the wearhouse. When they arrive at my door... they are black VINYL. UGH.

Buying a wood surround speaker is VERY IMPORTANT to me. I'm not so concerned about my CS400i because it sits on a vinyl 61" sony TV. The center matches. But, the vinyl surround speaker sits on a quality custom wooden hand-finished stand. UGH.

I surfed to Polk's website and, sure enough, the FX500 is pictured in wood. WTF. Answer me Polk-Paul or Micah, WHY DID POLK CHANGE THE FX500 to vinyl without informing the customer (by at minimum updating the website). Hmmmm?

I shall join you in the fight for the CS to come down!

At least give us the center channel program again!

I shall buy 55i and PSW 450 or 650 and then shall pay the difference to get the 400i

do it! You know you want to!
  • Purchased my LSi-15's from Crutchfield in August of 2007 for $1,350.00. Free shipping to Southern California and I paid no sales tax. What a bargain.

Unfortunately, no. all that showed up was earbuds which aren't even black.
Also some dashboard parts for a car... All of which are a very dark grey.

Wasn't the topic "Crutchfield lowered their prices"?

A lot of responses for a **** revival, huh? :p
