I have had these speakers sitting unused in my garage for more than 15 years. They have moved with me 3 times and are physically a bit worse for wear. I originally paid around $1100 in 1986 at the tender age of 17 and working three months to pay them off. I was curious as to how they sound now so I unplugged one of my 15's to give it a run. I have to admit I was freakin amazed at how awesome it sounds. The picture only shows the right speaker with my 15 and one of my subs behind.

I think I was historically under powering these with an old Yamaha AVR if I remember correctly. Anyway, attached are some pictures. Please chime in if anyone knows anything about this brand. The plate says:

    By the way, the ding in the woofer doesn't seem to effect the sound quality in the slightest. My plan is to strip the speakers and refinish. Does anyone have ideas on how to fix the tear in the woofer ribbon?

    Reconing or refoaming is the best way to fix the surround.

    At low volumes, you won't notice the tear a whole lot. It affects the lower frequencies the most and at higher volumes especially. Definitely something that will need to be fixed.

    I found a place to get a re-foam kit. This is going to be a small project for me. I think I will take a week vacation later this year and drink all week working on it..

    hey i didnt know that polk made these monitors
    i have had these spl 3000 for 22 years now
    but tonite the foam all let go around the seams
    its almost like its dried out and rotted
    i noticed that someone said you could get a refoaming kit
    where would that be ?
    i really want to try to save these babies
    i live in new brunswick

    Hello everyone.

    I have a pair of monitors exactly the same as Hockeyboy (SPL 3000) show on one of his post and im lookig to replace the original speakers (only the sub). The foam was all broken so i decided to change the whole speaker. If i would have take time i would find out that i can only refoam it but at the time, i just change the speakers....error. I cant find the sound i had at the time and i would change these again for the original one...or the perfect replacement.
    Can anyone help me on this one?
    I received these speakers from my brothers who died of cancer and i really want to make these live again.

    The SPL-4000 & 3000 series speakers were not made by Polk Audio. They were made by a company in Markham, Ontario, Canada that made DB+ & 5-6 other lines/brands of speakers. I have 2 pair of the SPL-4000's in great condition not for sale i use them to this day and have since i bought new in the 80's. No deteriorated surrounds either and cabinets are in great shape. The speakers are decent but not super high end in cost or sound performance and quality. The company did stand behind the tweeters and replaced them for me via shipping the replacements to me at near the 10 year warranty mark. On a side note i replaced my vintage Polks model 4a that are around the same age with another pair of Polk TSi 100 series made in China (sadly) that i use for rear surround channels.

    Love when old threads are revived.

    Other than Wilkie, doubt anyone really thought the above speakers were made by Polk. This forum discusses many different components/speakers/etc.

    After a little further searching tonight i found out though Klipsch bought API in 2006.
