On www.polksda.com it shows several models of polk 7 in a wide price range over the same timeframe.

7 1977-82 $440
7A 1977-82 $320
7B 1979-84 $480
7C 1979 $580
7 Series2 1990 $480

Other than the tweeters and exact drivers, is there any real difference in these. I'm looking for a pair and wonder if any one of these can be singled out as a diamond or a not-as-good. I've got a "hold" on a pair of 7B with peerless (the ones the grills don't go all the way to the bottom and have the emblem on wood), but the seller changed his tune on the shipping and am wondering if I should just keep looking.

The 7b's with peerless are excellent and highly saught after speakers.

In what way did the seller change his tune?

According to Polk's replacement parts table and other info from Polk I've picked up:

    '84-'85 7C with the SL1000 tweeter.
'85-'90ish 7C with the SL2000 tweeter (silver coil "fish eye"). I have a pair of these, btw.

C's are not the most desirable due to their tweeters, but the SL2000 can be upgraded to the new silk tweeters.

Seems like I see more 7Cs with the SL2000 come up vs. the other versions.

Edit: I originally typed SL2500, but meant SL2000. The SL2500 was in Series 2, the last series of old-school monitors.

I have a pair of what Polk people here described as 7a. They have SL2000 tweeter, a god awful connector for the grill...velcro on steroids...and are double fused. I have another pair that were described as 7c. Same tweeter, no fuse and the peg and hole connection. And damn, I just noticed that I dented the tweeter on one when I was bending over it to connect the speaker wire. No idea about mids or pr. I posted pics of these a couple weeks ago.

I have 7As with "PEERLESS" tweeters that they came from the factory with. One of the best speakers in the Polk lineup...PERIOD!!!

Is there a real name for this grill connection. They seem to me to have been a real bad idea. One man's opinion.

i have the 7A's and 7B's with peerless tweeters.. and i favor the 7B's slightly over the 7A's. Don't know why exactly... but it images better to me. Maybe i'm just hoping it's that way.. since I've had the 7B's for a couple years.. and only have had the 7A's for a few weeks.

7A's have two fuses, 7B's have one fuse. both of mine have the same peg connectors and both grills cover the entire front with the emblem on the grill not the bass.

This is my kid's setup for now. The Soundstage One integrated is a little lightweight. Good enough for his bedroom, though. I explained the concept of clipping and gave him the 12 o'clock rule of thumb. We'll see if he comes asking for fuses. First CD he throws in to hear it is "Weird Al". Heh.

I compared these 7s to some newer 5s (with sl-2000) on another system of mine and I gotta say that personally I liked the 5s better overall. I could compensate for the bass with the receiver tone controls. This was a little dissapointing, but it might have been a synergy issue with the system. It was a yammie HT receiver with LONG lamp cord for speaker wire in a very large vaulted room.
