Can anyone tell me anything about my 1986 db Plus speakers? They are model 880 floor speakers. Freq. reponse 35hz-22khz
96db efficiency. I know they are Canadian and the parent company was Audio Products International. Is this the same A.P.I. that owns Energy speakers? I got them as insurance replacements for some stolen Sansui classics. I'm thinking about selling them but don't know what the are worth or if they are sought after by anyone. Thanks in advance.

Just wanted to post an update on these speakers,[DB Plus Digital Monitors], for anyone interested. The parent company Audio Products International is the same Co. that owns Energy. Apparently DB Plus was only in production from approximately 1983 to 1987. I'm still searching for more information. A side note, I started listening to them again and decided to keep them. Then I found a pair of their 440's on ebay. Picked them up for $36.00 plus s/h.

I own the db plus 440 as well....and a friend has the 880.....

The answer is yes...they were a subsidiary of the company that owned Energy..that made low cost speakers for the American market for some big box stores like Newmark and Lewis (spelling), etc. In the eighties. They came with a 10 year warranty and were, I'm pretty sure an 8 ohm load. They used the polycell foam tweeter that some Infinity speakers also used during the same time period. The 440 sold for about 180 a pair and were a two way 6/6.5"-1".. The tweeter imployed a or 5" foam anti-difraction surround wafer that helped with imaging, etc. And the speakers were mirrored pairs in 3/4" MDF construction...containing something like a red or yellow fiberglass damping material inside. The 440 cross over point was 3000 hz. The range 45-22Khz. They weight about 16lbs a piece?

The speakers were EXTREMELY efficient. With specs in the mid-90 dbs and higher the higher the model. The 440s and the two way 10" models were the most highly regarded as you added more woofers or the passive..the sound got a bit muddier. The 10" was the BEST in the series...good highs, nice mids, tight lows! Maybe that was the 880 or (660 if there was such a number)....it stood about 24-25" or so in height?

The 440 retailed for about 180 a pair and the next model up a 10" and 1" two way for about 260 or so maybe 300 new! After that I can't remember! I have a brochure at home with ALL of the SPECS....for each model but I am currently in China. If you want to PM me some time in Sept/2010 I can send you that info.

I think the 440s had an efficiency rating of 94db. I've also seen the db series described as the 'poor mans' Energy!

I have a set of 990's I bought new back in the late 80's. I still use them to this day as my stereo speakers (vs my other HT speakers). Here's some pics and my brochure I picked up when I bought them . . .
