So the weather was a bit insane this afternoon here.
Started out sunny and clear but around 2:15 some clouds rapidly began to form....
At around 2:45 around 2 miles from my house some shots were taken of what the weather was doing...

Those 2 mischievous little guys ended up hitting Bondurant, a suburb of Altoona (where we live).
There were several homes damaged and cars and a camper overturned about 1.5 miles directly north of us.

Here is a picture someone took from a plane inbound to the DSM airport..
hwy9t1xbueis.jpg

Shortly after that, the cell that hit north of us developed into a much heartier storm and hit the Vermeer plant in Pella about 20 minutes SE of us.
It was a direct hit and several of their building (5,6, and 7) were nailed. They had a shift on site at the factories which cover a 1 square mile area.
Fortunately, there were only 7 people injured and all 7 have already been released from area hospitals.
Aerial photos can be seen here of the damage:

As well as a series of videos from the Weather Channel:
https://weather.com/storms/severe/video/a-long-duration-tornado-moves-through-pella-iowa

At around the same time as the Pella damage, Marshalltown about 30 minutes NE of us got nailed as well as a tornado went through the middle of downtown and sideswiped the city hall building taking the top of the tower off.
The emergency management services tower was completely destroyed as well knocking out communications to most of the town of 25-30k people.

Glad to hear everything is ok at your place we had a few storms here in the QCA tornadoe watch all that happened here was a lot of rain. Saw a lot of pictures on the local news, looks like Marshalltown got hit pretty hard as did a few places south of here. Looks like you dodged a bullet.

Those pictures are crazy. I watched a tornado destroy the other side of my small town when I was about 10 years old. Those things are no joke.

    Those storms are insane!
    Amazing photos.

I hate the damage and injury, or worse, but can't help but be in awe of storms like these systems.

Isn't there some funding initiative to get storm cellars for residents in some of the areas prone to tornadoes? I thought I saw something about it on The Weather Channel a while back.

Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant

    Pretty cool shot of...

No, it's not 7 tornadoes. That's what I thought at first and then I asked myself....how can that happen like this? It can't. It was a succession of shots with the same tornado. Pretty cool nonetheless.

Is this storm season or what?

    I'm glad you're all right!

We had lightning strike about 100 feet from our house today. Felt my hair standing on end, and I had time to run and unplug my sound system after I realized what it was. Good thing too, the power went out and when it came back my Dad’s Pioneer Elite SC-25 wouldn’t power up. Just a flashing blue light. We let it sit unplugged for an hour, and it came back to life, although now it’s doing weird stuff, like randomly switching inputs. At least it works :)
Anyway, I got side tracked. The lightning struck about 100 feet away from our house, and I felt the ground shudder, the walls rattled, and my ears were ringing. Rather intense.

I too have had my hair raised on my body and my tongue :p tingled like I had a 9volt battery touching it.
    I was working in a well. :o

I climbed out and a bolt came down about a 100 ft. away also. I don't remember the crack or boom but that bolt of electrical energy is forever burned into my memory. I can picture it as I type this.

I just had a bolt hit close to the house a few weeks ago. My cat was sitting in my lap at the time. Well I'm lucky the cat only scared my leg as she bolted off of my lap fearing for her life!
I'm shocked nothing got blown up here.

I've had quite a few close lightning strikes shake this house this year. Each one are scary events for sure! You can sometimes hear them getting closer and closer and then...BAM :s

Yep, lightning works in mysterious ways. One hit about 100 ft away from the house in the woods, toasted my old Monster power conditioner and a cable box. The TV and receiver, dvd player were spared. One and done with those MOV power conditioners when it comes to lightning strikes. That made me buy a PS Audio unit.

Next strike was closer, blew out a section of landscaping wall around one of my ponds. About 15 ft. wide and 4 ft. high. Those landscaping blocks were almost 100 ft away in my neighbors yard.

The distance between that wall, and where my cable comes into the house is less than 20 ft. The PS Audio unit didn't blink, everything was saved, and the same unit continues it's duties today.
