Officially a licensed driver!!

Yesterday was my birthday, and the first thing I did was get up and take the drivers test. test. I passed, and now I have my permit! I’ve been waiting for 10 years to get my license, and now I finally have it! Of course, in Florida they don’t actually do a driving test, so other than driving down the dirt road by our house, I still haven’t driven a car. But either way, I’m still excited!!
So, one quick question, what do you guys recommend as my first car? I don’t know how long it will be before I actually get a car, but I’d like to get some ideas of what I should look for. All I know is I want a manual, AC, and cheap. Thanks!
Micah

My first vehicle was a 92 Toyota Pickup with the legendary RE22 4 banger. Wonderful vehicle! I enjoyed my 98 Civic DE 5 speed as well, both are very reliable.

Are you looking for newer vehicles? Cannot go wrong with Honda or Toyota although I will say the new corolla's engines aren't what they used to be so I would go a model higher. I currently drive a 2017 Toyota IA and I like it. Cheap, good features and fun to drive. I heard the manual has a butter smooth clutch but I opt'd for an automatic due to our other car being a manual.

    *Edit* Congrats btw!

You can get a driver's license without actually taking a driving test?!

Someone might get a lot more than their feelings hurt if we start filling up the roads with drivers who have no actual driving experience!

To the OP, do yourself and all the drivers on the road a huge favor, take a driver's education course before buying a car. It's not as easy as it may look.

^^ Agreed 120%. It took me three tries to pass my driver's test, and now I'm one of the best drivers I know. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but no accidents in 18 years of driving.

In Florida you have to have a learner's permit for a year, 50 hours behind the wheel, 10 of are at night. Then you can take a driver's test to get a license. Even then there's still restrictions I believe such as you can't drive after 11PM and possibly a restriction on the number of other teenagers that can be in the car at once. He's still years away from a real drivers license.

Side note I didn't get my drivers license till I was 18 and didn't have to go through with a permit. I just went there, past the written test, passed the drive around the block and a three point turn then off I was!

Funny thing, the first time I drove on a major highway at night I got a massive nose bleed out of nowhere. I turned out to be an alright driver but I am overly cautious by nature and that translates to the road. Just remember to watch out for other people and always think 10 steps ahead with an exit plan!

Wow a 15 year old polkie who's into tunes and now just getting his learners permit. I bought my 14 year old grandson a 1999 1500 Silverado Z71 4X4 with a big ol 5.3L 8 cylinder. He just finished Driver's Education privately as schools don't sponsor that any more.

Scary thing is they are turning him loose as of Monday to drive to school activities, and summer jobs, the catch is only alone no one under the age of 16 with a valid license is allowed to ride with him. He starts his corn detassling job next week as he has to pay for fuel for his gas guzzler.

Oh yeah he even had our very own Lightman riding shotgun with him a few times so he passed the distracted driver test :D He has kept a A aveverge in school to keep his insurance down. He is also into music and likes it loud, and has a crush a a cute girl who he hangs out with but can't drive her around in his truck, and we like it that way. To the OP if your really a young un like you claim to be good luck in Drivers Ed, and get a big ol truck.

Absolutely! Thanks! According to my Mom, I am the only teen she wouldn’t be scared of driving. I’ll probably be that one guy on the highway who is going 5 under the speed limit

That would actually be a good choice I think. Cheap and reliable.

Yep. All of this is true.

I forgot to mention, I am going to probably be the most careful driver you’ve ever seen. Take it nice and slow. I’ve been in a car accident before. Both trucks were totaled, and my mom was hurt. (Not her fault). All this to say, I know how dangerous it can be if your not careful.

When the time comes to purchase a vehicle for the young lad, hopefully, it should be safe and economical. Getting a job is a must as fuel for the vehicle isn't getting any cheaper. Paying for your own gas and insurance will teach you to be responsible. Paying for the car as well will give you a greater respect for maintaining & caring for what is your own property. I can almost guarantee that if a friend decides to scratch your car backward for fun, you won't be letting him off easy.

That’s the plan, safe and economical. I am pretty responsible for the most part, the time when my TT stylus broke was a moment of tiredness.

Don't let a moment of "tiredness" affect your ability to drive because you could be injured, you could injure someone(s) else, or both. Remember that you aren't alone on the road out there. I've seen many spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries as a result of auto collisions. Trust me, that's something you don't want to experience for yourself.

I will not. If I’m even the slightest bit tired, I’m gonna not be driving.
Also, tiredness wasn’t the word I was looking for. More a lapse of judgement because I was tired.
