Lawn Maintenance

With Summer upon us and that it rains in the afternoons at least 5 out of 7 days here through September it gets a little tough to keep up with the rate of growth of your lawn here in SWFL.

Now I have someone who does mow and trim, but the amount of rain and sun we get this time of year can still be too much for them to keep up with... So getting to your grass every 5th through 8th day is sometimes not possible.

I don't mind that if on the 3rd or 4th day giving it a cut when weather permits .... Now I can mow as good as anybody but have always been jealous of the way the pros can edge with a string trimmer and I have a LOT of edging to do with the curbed landscape beds.

So I picked up this little gadget called the Edgit Pro which is simple device that just siimply replaces the guard on your trimmer.

http://www.forestry-suppliers.com/product_pages/products.php?mi=74591&itemnum=80105&redir=Y

Works like a champ and is a real time saver...

The only negative I have seen is that it can fling rocks, but so can using your string trimmer at 90* angles. but my edges are clean and free of rocks.

Pretty sweet

Mikey, on the Edgit site, it looks like they're showing product for other brands as well? Am I meesseeng sahmteeng?

Interesting. I was looking at getting a new grass trimmer. Thinking Gas, our yard is too big for extension cords. Corner lot so I have to fish the cord under the fence. Anyway looking at all possibilities with accessories too.

I still edge and trim myself. It is my only form of exercise these days but I don’t mow. I have experienced other robotic mowers and the Husqvarna can’t be beat. There are several other brands, even the Robin Autopilot made here in Dallas can’t touch it. I plan on becoming a dealer for the Robin (side business) but it can’t touch the Husqvarna.

Buy into DeWalts cordless landscape system. It gets awesome reviews and on a couple landscaper websites, some have mentioned they can go a full day on one charge per tool. Get a couple batteries then you can buy the bare tools.

Are there 4-stroke systems like this out now? I thought I heard something some time ago about 2-stroke stuff getting phased out due to pollution?

I'm liking this Edgit thing. I'm going to pull the number off my trimmer to see if there's an Edgit available for it.

When I moved into my place in '09, I splurged for a Stihl Kombi system. It's a single motor/drive unit, with accessory trimmer, edger, and blower attachments. Works pretty well. The only thing I hate about Stihl is that I have to take it to a dealer for parts/maintenance? I can't seem to find parts otherwise.

Honda makes 4 strokers but they are a couple of lbs heavier than comparable 2 cycle. My Echo is actually the interchangeable version and I plan to get the pruner and extension for when I cant reach with my chainsaw. The thing that sold me on echo is that I have an echo chainsaw that is like 5 years old and it starts every time....Plus echo comes with a 5 year warranty for homeowners.

I'm gonna check into that unit for my Stihl. Went to that brand years ago and have a trimmer, blower and chain saw. Bought from a local shop and they are all "prosumer" models and reasonably priced. Work perfectly start after start, and if any issues the shop repairs them for next to nothing.

I have all echo products and Honda mowers. Years ago I decided to buy every brand I could get my hands on. At the same time and try them out. I also bought every brand of fertilizer and weed control. Used each on different part of my lawn and concluded what worked best. For my lawn, type of grass, region, and ph of soil.

Honda gave me the best cut. Lesco was best fertilizer. Residential stuff that is.

    Cheers.

I was doing some yardwork last night and found myself wishing I'd already bought an Edgit to try. Gonna have a real look later and decide whether to try one.

What kind of trimmer line do you guys like? Mine takes 0.095, and I've been using the Rino-tuff HD, that has six edges on it. Sometimes it seems to break prematurely, but I usually chalk that up to incorrect technique, letting the line bend too much instead of holding the trimmer head a bit further away so the line can fully extend. I think they've modified the design now so that it's not hollow inside anymore.
    uje0aja245jd.png

There's some other stuff out there I see in multi-edge star shape. Looks like it'd still shred pretty well, but possibly be more resistant to breaks having a larger cross-section?
    o6ehtwwnf6hy.png27btm35sc183.png

I usually use Sta-bil in my fuel, too. I might go through 10 gallons a season, and I put the recommended amount in my cans at each fill up. This year I picked up both the Sta-bil Storage and the 360 Performance product to try out, unable to decide in the store which to buy. Last time I refilled the cans, I put an ounce of each in a 2.5gal cans. I mixed up a new batch of trimmer fuel last night with my last bottle of Stihl's synthetic 2-cycle oil, and I noticed the trimmer seemed to be running exceptionally well. Had noticeably faster throttle response, and did seem more powerful, and less boggy. I suppose it could have been the fuel/oil mix before, or getting to the end of an old batch. Absolutely obliterated an area of overgrowth in a corner of the yard I'd been neglecting for a few weeks. All my equipment starts up without any trouble even after sitting a while, so I keep use this stuff.

The real test will be when I use my existing blade edger attachment. That can bog down in heavy growth.
