[EDIT] FWIW, here's Stereophile's take on the original Sprout:

Ya know Doc, for a reviewer in such a prestigious Audio mag. to be using Radio shack USB and IC's, one has to wonder about the validity of his review. Granted, he switched out cables eventually to AQ, but just the fact he's reviewing gear with Radio shack cables throws up red flags for me.

It is interesting that the manufacturers (distributors) of these sorts of amplifiers spec only 1kHz THD. The Stereophile review of the original Sprout was somewhat revealing (although the undefeatable LF boost of he original morph of the Sprout sort of complicated measurement thereof).

It is a plus that the LF boost is defeatable on the new and improved Sprout 100 :)

I really like what PS Audio is doing these days. Like the products, though I haven't heard this piece (the Sprout is what Paul, the owner, uses at his home) and their customer service is incredible.

Still wish i didn’t sell my “original” sprout but feel the $600 price tag is pretty steep for this product. The volume control vie remote is nice this time around.

I did not know (or, more likely, did not remember :p ) that you had had a Sprout!

You're kidding, right? $600 for 100 wpc, asychronous DAC with it's capabilities, variable sub output, phono stage, built in Bluetooth...

Sounds like a nobrainer to me.

I read this someplace else, and strictly FWIW:
... TEAC AI-301DA. Same B&O amp module now, similar feature set. Sprout100 has onboard phono and pre-outs. AI-301DA has additional line and digital coaxial input , and can be had ~$300 cheaper [than the Sprout 100]

    Thoughts?

I have always been curious about how the TEAC compares to the Sprout.

The two most obvious differences between the two are:

    1) The TEAC is only 22W into 8 ohms, and the Sprout is 50W.

    2) The Sprout has a phono ["vinyl"] input and the TEAC has none.

How they might compare in SQ is another issue.

I would probably say Elac would be a close competitor can be found under 600, close to the sprouts 599 price point.

    Elac vs Sprout
    Pros:
    Offers sub blending room EQ.
    More inputs,+1 Optical, +1 Coax, +1 RCA

    Cons:
    Less power (40wpc 8ohms)
    No phono input
    No preamp output

Elac is supposed to be coming out with a version that also has a built in streamer, it all depends on what your needs are.

The Sprout is great for the money especially if your into LP.

I had the Teac at one point thinking it was a no brainer at that price. I couldn't get past the terrible sound quality and sent it back. Owning a PS Audio Directstrem DAC, I can say I like what they do with that DAC. I'm not sure how that translates to their use of the Sabre chipset, but, I'm hopeful given what they've been doing with their other pieces. Hopefully they'll run it for $499 during the holidays, again, and I'll grab one for the kitchen/coffee shop.

That was my concern. I am curious of what the sound quality will be with the Sprout. It looks like it has potential to maybe go into an office set up I am going to do in the future.

No, i’m Not kidding, and you just made my point.
$499 is a better price for this particular piece. That is was i bought my original sprout for and it came with an AC3.

I was already questioning your line of thinking and rationalizing my last statement makes me wonder even more. You went from inferring it should be priced like the Teac to saying I prove your point by hoping for $100 off on a holiday sale makes no sense. I'd buy it at its price point as I feel it offers a great value. I don't need one at the moment or I would buy it at this price. When my house work gets done I'll probably have a perfect spot for it, and on sale or not, it'll be what I get. Hoping to save $100 if it's on sale in no way proves your point.

I believe it offers a great value from what I can see and know about the company from previous experience.

  • The Sprout nails looks and versatility. And all the reviews I've read agree it nails sound quality. I need a remote so the S100 is the complete package.

I just want to get a line on the SVS SoundBase when it comes out in the Fall. Might be good completion.
