I’ve been using a Hario Skerton to grind my coffee beans for years. It takes a little longer to do it by hand but I prefer it to electric grinders. I use a Hario V60 pour over and, like Brock, I also drink cold brewed coffee. So, I guess that’s 2 different brewing methods I employ.

At $21/ lb and yielding 40 cups of coffee/ lb the cost / cup is 52.5 cents / cup. What does a Nespresso pod of equal quality cost?

There can't be a Nespresso pod of "equal quality" because it's all pre-ground before packaging, and thus, inherently flawed.

Leave it to the French to blend chicory root with coffee. Popular in Vietnam. The Mrs. is Vietnamese, so I got introduced to this unique blend. Quite good, IMO. New Orleans favorite too!

This thread reminds me of that scene in David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive" where the big guy can't be satisfied with the espresso, and spits (drools) it out in his napkin in the conference room. Classic scene.

.80 or 1.00. When I consider the fact that I have to have a grinder and that beans start deteriorating from the second they're opened it's a tradeoff I happily made. Being single made that decision easier. I've never been happier with my home coffee brews than I am now. The ease and convenience combined with great espresso is a win/win for me.

Wrong! Oxidation of coffee happens even in unground beans, less so, but it still occurs. A pod is ground, filled and sealed within seconds of each process. I've drank 6 month old pods that tasted just as good as the day I originally got them.

My father was born in France in the 1930’s. He Grew up in an occupied household during WWII. As a teen, he left France and went to work for his aunt at a hotel she owned in Monrovia. After that, he came to the United States, went to school at the University of Illinois, met my mother, got married, started a family.

His coffe of choice has ALWAYS been, as far back as I can remember, Nescafé instant coffee. As someone mentioned earlier, many Europeans drink instant coffee. He had a French press but I don’t remember it being used often. Probably only when we had company.

Until recently, people in England drank instant coffee almost exclusively, as opposed to brewed. But there is a new trend of boutique coffee shops popping up all over the country.

And I believe the all-aluminum pods are vacuum sealed as well...better than Keurig with their plastic cups and paper covers.

One other benefit of the Nespresso pods is the variety for when you have visitors. Different roasts for different folks, so individual cups are helpful.

Anybody here ever try the coffee made with beans that have been crapped-out by an Indonesian cat?

When I was in Alaska as a young airman (JEEP they called us, Junior Echelon Enlisted Personnel), the Lifers would make us make the coffee each morning. Two big 20 or more cup urns.

Lots of work cleaning them out and refilling with water. To get "back" at them, we would just leave the grounds in from the previous day and add the water. Tasted bitter and looked awful - they drank it without a single gripe.

We had a guy in our shop in Germany that we banned from the coffee pot. He was in the "more is better" camp, and you could drink his coffee with a fork. His last name was Bardmass, but he quickly got nick-named "Batman."
