On the strength of your description, the belt 100% definitely needs to be replaced.

That's a sweet looking table, Al, congrats!
Is that a real wood plinth?!?

A big part of the vinyl experience for me is the aesthetic design of the various components, and the simple process of sound production in these systems, marveling at how it works. It's really quite amazing when you think about it.

A spinning platter on a dimly lit beautiful table can have me entranced in the session in a way that's somehow more engaging to me than digital. I have listening enjoyment both ways, but it's relaxing in a different way. Because of this, I'm drawn to relaxing music choices for vinyl, mostly.

That's the coffee driven embellished version of saying, I'd enjoy a table like that one and the whole of the process you're beginning, and I hope you enjoy it as well.

Rich, I may just have to sign up on vinyl engine. I’ve been disappointed a couple times not being able to view manuals.

I've never had anything bad happen from their site, been a member there for many, many years. Since 2007.

Ditto, FWIW -- if you need something from them & cannot get it, pop me a PM & I can help you out (as, I'm sure, could others here).

Scott - the plinth is a dense particle board. I don’t think it’s a real wood veneer, but it is way nicer than I was expecting. Some reviews complained that it was just a ‘sticker’. It’s certainly more substantial than that. The grain looks very real - to the point of having grooves (fitting for vinyl, huh?) in it. And it is precisely cut and applied. You can’t tell that it’s not solid wood.

There is something relaxing about watching a record spin with the orange glow of the speed adjust light. I will say that I need to clean some of my daughters LPs! Man does this table and setup pick up all the ticks, pops, and static on the records. I also realized that her copy of Rumors has a very bad deformed section at the outer edge of the album. So bad that the needle jumps out of it. Doesn’t seem to do that on her table which leads me to believe that the tracking force on this new table is much lighter than on her Kenwood.

This MCS is a pretty nice table. The plinth is fairly substantial; the isolation feet have some nice dampening; the cue drop is very smooth; and the auto return works great. The weak point is the tone arm. It definitely feels cheap. I think with a new power cord, ground wire, and interconnect as well as a good cleaning and polishing of the dust cover, it will look like new again.

Rich/Mark, I do plan to register on Vinyl Engine next time I need to access a manual. Looks like a great resource. And Mark, Thanks again for helping Katie build her LP collection to where it is today! She still spins some of the albums you sent her for Christmas 2016. :)

Sounds like a great acquisition there, Al.

Speaking of ticks and pops and re: the cleaning, I'm messing with the Vinyl Styl bath right now. Ordered it a few weeks back with some Amazon credit and hadn't gotten around to checking it out until just the other night.

I was testing it on some old vinyl that I hadn't even listened to. I also didn't think to a take any photos after the first wash, because I was just testing it out, getting a feel for how it works. First thing I noticed was that, even though they say you don't need to rinse with their formula, it seems that it can streak. So I emptied the reservoir and put in some distilled and gave the few records a spin and put them on the drying rack.

The next morning, I noticed this in the distilled rinse bath...
    I'd say it's doing a decent job?
Next time I'll pay closer attention to the wash.

I learned that at the feet of the Master. George Grand -- of the Jersey Grands.

  • Regarding the turntable -- YES! Very nice unit. I've owned the T25, T35 and T55 over the years and they are all perfectly competitive with $300-$500 units of today depending on the cartridge. Here my beauty ;)

That was quite the high-end Harman Kardon series back in the day.

I owned a receiver from that series. There was something else too but I forget.

I JUST happened to spot the equipment under a table at a church bazaar. 15.00 for both units. :p They still worked too. :)
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.
