Static Electricity in the House

verbverb Posts: 3,327
Cold here in Michigan. And dry in the basement/man cave at times. I occasionally get a static shock when touching my audio equipment, which scared the crap out of me since I don't want to fry anything.

Read some other forums where folks purposely discharge any potential static on other grounded items (wall switch, metal audio cabinet, etc.) prior to touching the equipment.

I now touch the metal columns on my audio rack as well.

Others add a humidifier to increase the RH in the room, which I have not done yet.

What do you guys do?

CP members in warm, balmy areas of the world, well, ok, please opine too!

I have a whole house humidifier, Aprilaire 768. Has an automatic humidistat, but if your HVAC allows, then just tie it into the controller...that's how we have it setup now.

I know we wouldn't want to be without it, maintains 38-40% RH and we don't think about it.

When it wasn't in use, we would get static shocks all the time, also it helps tremendously in the cold months with dry skin...basically a necessity.

They aren't difficult to install, if you are even thinking about it, just get one.

Bring up the RH to at least 40%... Just movement of air can cause a discharge within components.

Is that the same reason why my toothbrush tastes like almonds, there are pinholes in the foil tops of all the yogurts, and I always find a running chainsaw underneath my pillow?

Russ and static electricity is no joke. I've seen the dude walk across a parking lot in the middle of the day and all the lot lights went on as he passed them by.

He's used to it...happens at night too, while he's peeing&peeking around in the neighbors bushes

Some reason 15min later you see red and blue lights too
