Stupid things we do to ourselves

Options
This weekend i went up northern Maine to do some closing up on the camp im setting up for my daughter Rebecca & grandbabby on the way. Anyways. This bee was pissn me off. He landed & i took off my hat & stood on a 5 gallon bucket & went to hit him & down i went. The ground was fairly soft & didnt hurt so it seemed. It was the 4×4 lumber jab in the back that hurt. I laid there for a few minutes wondering if i broke anything. Then the freaking bee flew by me. I decided to take a break in pain for awhile. Why do i do things like this to myself :)

I was burning brush n roots earlier this summer. It was dark & i had a few too many. I was holding the fire poker stick & i was feeling quite well. I was flinging it around like i was Steven Segel & it hit the ground & bounced back & hit me right in the forehead. Blood everywhere. Thought i was gonna have to go to ER. Grabbed a towel & was waiting for fire to die down-should i had to leave. Great i thought. Bleed like a pig & it healded right up. Another battle scare for this dumbie

A few months later and the exact same scenario plays out. I think he has learned his lesson now... I hope.

Being stupid is different from being clumsy. :)

Usually they go hand in hand though! haha

I think for myself; as a seasoned and nearly life long cyclist I made a major bonehead mistake last season. Was flying around a very familiar trail and ripped through a fast sweeping turn and came face to face with a fairly large dropped tree right across the trail.

Like an idiot I panicked and grabbed a whole lot of front brake (brand new hydro discs) and never got my weight back on the bike. Front wheel locked up and over the bars I went! Naturally, the bars twisted on me as I fell and twisted my arms along with them, under me. So I could not catch myself.

Landed right on my head and left shoulder. Heard a CRACK as I landed. I was convinced that I broke my collar bone. I was terrified to move. Ended up being my helmet cracking! I was so relieved, till I remembered that it was a $180 helmet...

In the end, had a slight concussion and somehow got a sweet hole in my left shin that bled like crazy. It was a fun ride back home.

I heard that crack before.... it was my T12 vertebra. Did a whole lot of BMXing from about 15yrs old up until I was 45 and broke my back. A transfer from bowl to bowl in the skatepark. A trick I could do blind, come out of the bowl I see a young 10-12 yo kid coming at me. I fold it up and twist in the air to avoid him it works but catch my rear wheel going back in. I ride the transition all the way to the bottom on my front wheel in which the other side bowl transition slams me to my tailbone. The only thing that moved for a couple of minutes was my eyeballs. 15 minutes later I try to stand up no go. My son throws my bike into the truck I roll into the bed he's 15 and drives my to the emergency room. 6hrs later and lots of morphine they tell me I'm lucky to walk out. Morel of the story young kids heal faster and may of not been hurt too bad, I should of just let it go but that is easier said than done. That was 7 years ago no more bowl transfers for me I just ride the transitions and flow safe stuff :)

Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Love threads like this one..so here goes....A couple of winters ago it was very up and down with the temps...One day or night, with a few inches of snow on the ground,it became unseasonably warm and melted most of it...Then the temp dipped big time into the single digits overnight..More powder snow covered where the previous snow had melted..Anyway,next day was trash day,so I put on my running shoes instead of my cleated boots and headed out to haul the cans up to the road..I skidded big time..but didn't fall..The area around the cans and the drive are on a bit of an incline so I remember telling myself NOT to come back down and hit that slope..walk way around it...so what did I end up doing?..La De Da'd right onto that slope..Feet flew right out from under me about head high and I came down in a heap...Last thing I remember was calling myself a thick headed SOB...and thinking..Gee those stars are pretty...Only thing was..it was about 9 in the morning..

I did something similar--Big melt, followed by hard freeze. Went to help neighbor salt his driveway before dealing with mine. Returning, I made it one step into my driveway before I banana-peeled/Charlie Browned. No stars for me when I landed, just a broken leg...

Gotta be careful with ice like that. Had an uncle die in a fall when the back of his head smacked the corner of the steps as he went down.

A few of you here know my history with drinking (as in I use to drink a lot of bourbon until I quit almost a year ago) so I have a story or three involving me and stupid stuff. A little over a year ago I was contemplating adding shot to the base of my Ushers so before I bought the shot I experimented with adding weight to the top of the speakers to see what kind of difference it would make. I cut floor mat and placed a 25lb hexagonal dumbbell on top of each speaker. One morning I decided to make an adjustment on the spiked feet, so, I took the weight off the top of the right speaker and made my adjustment. As I had started in on the second fifth of bourbon of the session I forgot to take the weight off the left speaker. I felt something slam my right index finger in to the cast iron base of the speakers and I started my Tourettes type rant before I looked down and the blood and my finger and thought this could be bad. I wrapped it up, elevated it and went to bed hoping it would stop bleeding. End up having to go to the hospital after the booze wore off and it wouldn't stop bleeding. Crushed the tip of my finger and split it on both sides. What a dumbazz! In the second pic you can see that it's still slightly deformed 15 months later. Again, what a dumbazz!!

Yeah, 3 hairline fractures in the bones of my big toe. To add insult to injury, a couple of weeks later I was playing kickball with my sons. Kicking with the other foot of course. I ended up badly stubbing the other big toe on a botched kick. Pretty sure I broke that one too. Both my toenails fell off & have never regrown properly. A foot model I will never be.

On the bright side, ever since I showed the dehumidifier who's boss, it's been running like a top, lol.

This happened around winter 2010. There was at least 4+ feet of snow on ground. We just got dumped on 6-8 inches or more. I woke up & there was a tall Birch tree that fell & it was leaning against the power lines. I called CMPower Co & they said it was the phone companies line. So i called them & they said it would be 2+ weeks before they could come n take care of it... Ok i thought. Great gotta look at that freaking thing. Nope. Not me. Chainsaw was put up for the winter. The tree was on a 12ft banking high & leaning on the wire. So what does Randy do ? I start to climb it & shaking the shat out of it. Nothing. So i keep climbing. Shake up n down. Nothing. All of a sudden the freaking thing lets loose. I fall to the 13ft or so to the ground THUMP i go. I laid there for a few after about knocking the shat out of me. I got up. I blame it on being part French & stupid

As some of you know i drive 18 wheeler. I was down in NJ & it was a beautiful day. I got to Point Pleasant early to pick up a load of dogfish :( coming back to Maine. I went to get out of the truck & i somehow missed the running board on the fuel tank. I fell & just as quick as i fell i bounced back up & looked around me to see if anyone saw me. Im sure someone did-but i didnt see anyone. As i walked away from truck i hurt. I hurt bad & for a week or so i was a mess. 4-5 feet dont seem like much-but danm. I still feel the pain :)
