In the first video they are recording -- hence, the earphones and no air-conditioning, which would hiss in the recorded music.

At least, that's the explanation given by one commenter on the website. :)

Ok, just watched them on my phone. Awesome! But in the second video, did anyone else experience static pops or anything akin to vinyl noise?

I loved this! I always wanted to learn to play the bass. I've tapped beats on the bodies before nevertheless. I bet this guy can play the drums also. I went to H.S. with a now upright bass master...Rodney Whitaker I wonder if he is familiar with this artist? I'll shoot him an email. EDIT-OH Wait...after a little net search...I see that they've performed at the same venue...that figures: https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=it&u=http://www.cataniajazz.com/2014/10/vi-presentiamo-la-xxxii-stagione-di-concerti-catania-jazz/&prev=search

We go waay back to his freshman year of H.S. and I was a junior at the time. He was just getting started and did not even have his own bass. Our jazz sextet used to do paying gigs outside of school. We pooled money from a gig and purchased him a used Fender bass. He's come a long way since then and surpassed many of the other great musicians I went to H.S. with. It was a golden era of sorts...some still work in the industry today.

All should check out some of his jazz works.

Its a way of recording that is a cross between live and studio. With the audience wearing headphones all get great audio wherever they are in the room. A group that I'm fond of Snarky Puppy, has produced several recordings using this method.
