I have owned Polks from the original Monitor series (7 and 10). I am considering upgrading to the LS70 or LS90. How does the LS series compare to the original Monitors? I would really appreciate any feedback, opinions or suggestions. Cheers

Hochpt is selling a pair of LS-90's and he knows about them. Not sure if you can PM a club member with one post.

The LS90's sound very good. Much better than my Monitor 70's. I haven't heard the original Monitors, so I can't comment there, but the LS 90's are a very good speaker.

Clean, open and airy and surprisingly great bass.

I must disclaimer, that my pair had the x-overs redone at some point before I got them so take that into consideration.

Thanks! That is very helpful. How would you compare the 70 to the 90? I don't know if my room is large enough for the 90s.

Thank you, hochpt21. Just finished reading the threads. Guess I am still looking for a more in depth comparison between the LS70 and LS90. May have to take a couple of road trips to audition.

No problem. I've never owned the LS70's so I can't help you there. Only the Monitor 70's which are a completely different speaker.

I've been listening to my LS70's since I purchased them in 1995. Since then I've replaced the drivers and tweeters and upgraded the crossovers with Sonicaps. The Sonicap upgrade was pretty dramatic. That may be since they replaced worn out "10 cent caps" but they seem to perform a lot cleaner and linear than when they were new. The most improvement came when I changed my amp from a EL34 based 34 WPC Prima Luna amp to a 6550 based 60 wpc Cary. The LS70's really liked the power increase. The bass tightened up, the midrange came further forward and the soundstage opened. I've also noticed the hump that DSkip mentioned but with the above mentioned changes that seemed to somewhat diminish to the point where I don't notice it now. (Maybe I don't know any better. I'm somewhat of a recluse and only have a few friends that have rigs I can compare to. None of which are tube based.) I also placed these speakers on 4" thick Myrtlewood blocks supported by brass spikes and have connected them to the amp with Kimber Cable 8TC cables. With this all said I've never been able to compare these with neither LS50's nor LS90's. Sometime, in the future, I intend to replace these, but I must admit, despite owning them for 20 some years, I still kind of like them.

This is really all that matters!
