Subsonic / Rumble Filter

Options
As some of you may recall, we set our older daughter up with a turntable for Christmas. Several members hooked her up with some donated vinyl that she is really taking a liking to! One member even sent some extra goodies including some essential cleaning tools.

After using the cleaning brush on one of the LPs, we noticed a bit of distortion that we first attributed to possibly static or something caused by cleaning the LP. It seemed to go away. However, we recently rearranged her room and the TT and receiver now sit right next to each other on her dresser (not ideal, I know). When playing records now, any heavy bass or volume levels over about 1/4 turn on the volume knob (not crazy loud by any means) cause the feedback and crazy movement of the woofers in the speakers. We tried two sets of speakers and it's the same with both. I've also tried using the preamplifier in the TT as well as the phono input on the receiver. Neither is any better than the other.

A little research and some help from forum members lead me to research 'rumble' and subsonic filters. After reading up on it, it certainly sounds like that's exactly what it is. It scares the crap out of us. When it happens, the sound is terrible (muffled and distorted) and the woofers look like they are going to explode right out of the speaker (scary stuff)!

Voltz sent me a link to a subsonic filter by DB Systems. Wondering if anyone has one or something similar they might be willing to part with.

Thanks,
-Al

Rumble is not caused bu having the TT too close to the receiver. It's caused by the TT being too close to the speakers, or if the TT and speakers are on the same shelf.

The TT is very close to the speakers. Will isolation pads and a subsonic filter help?

I'll try, but the way the room is set up now, it won't be easy...

A subsonic filter should help. Back in the day a receiver usually came with a sub-sonic filter. Not sure how hard it is to get a stand alone unit.

    good luck

    This is a classic problem.
Mechanical isolation is probably the best place to start -- there are many pathways that might be trod :)

The other approach -- if your daughter's not a basshead ;) -- might be a pair of these:

    https://www.parts-express.com/harrison-labs-fmod-inline-crossover-pair-30-hz-high-pass-rca--266-248

It would have to go between the phono preamp output and her receiver or preamp or integrated amp.

There are a few different ones available; I semi-arbitrarily chose 30 Hz -- although that might  be about right as they're supposed to be 12 dB/octave roll-off.

Now, mind you, I have no idea how well these'd work -- I don't know what audible impact they might have (other than rolling off the LF response, of course!) -- but I do know that they exist. That's the best I can do ;)

Wall mounting the TT or the Speakers and providing a bit more separation might be feasible Josh.

Regarding a subsonic filter, here is what Darryl recommended. It looks very similar to what Mark is recommending Just a little lower cutoff at 18 Hz:

For 20 or 25 bucks, it's worth a try. I'll try reconfiguring the system too.

    Thanks for all the help.
