Maybe this question's been asked before, but then again maybe not...

Who's your favorite composer for movie soundtracks? I've set up a poll with a few names that come to my mind. I know I'm leaving off a bunch (including a bunch of 'old-timers), but it will only let me have 10 spots...

If no one on the list does it for you, who does???

Then when you pick you favorite composer, you gotta tell us your favorite movie or two that they did...

By the way, I'm a huge fan of movie scores, therefore this poll....

I like 'em all, Danny Elfman gets my vote overall...

Thomas Newman - American Beauty, Lost in Translation, Six Feet Under (HBO).

But I love Danny Elfman and John Williams too. And Michael Kamen's score for Band of Brothers was great.

There's a two disc professionally mastered John Williams compilation CD. I got it for my dad last xmas. Not sure if you have any ties to the cincinatti pops orchestra or anything, just saying if you want to hear the original performances, it's out there.

My vote goes to Williams, btw. Other people have had a few good scores, but Star Wars was amazing and he hasn't looked back

Elfman. His "Edward Scissorhands" socre is my absolute favorite of any movie score to date.
    If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent.

One that occurred to me that's not on the list is Randy Newman.

He's scored: Ragtime, The Natural, Toy Story, Avalon, Monster's Inc., Seabiscuit and a ton more.
    More later,
    Tour...

Yeah, there's quite a few that I didn't get on there. I met Randy while in the Jazz program at UNT. We always had people coming in doing workshops...those were the days...met a bunch of great musicians in person...

    Michael Brecker
    Dennis Chambers
    David Geribaldi
    Harry Connick Jr
    Kenny Wheeler
    Dennis DiBlaggio
    Pat Matheny
    ...lots of others...

Randy was there for a composition workshop with department chair Joseph Klein...good stuff...

One of the best scores I can remember was Marvin Hamlish's reworking of Scott Joplin's music in the The Sting, I felt like the score took on a life of its own and was almost akin to another actor in the film.

Another of my favorites was Rota for the Godfather and Godfather II.

I voted for Trevor Rabin only because of his former affiliation with YES. Although I did not like the TR era Yes. Just Psyched Yes is touring this summer.

    You left out John Carpenter.

    Hi,

Got to be Danny Elfman hands down for me. Edward Scissorhands, but I also really liked his music on the more obscure "Delores Claiborne" soundtrack. His music really has a distinctive fingerprint. Good stuff.

John Williams is my favorite. Star Wars has to be the most widely recognized movie theme of all time. Hearing the main theme with the opening crawl gives me chills.

Howard Shore's score for Lord of the Rings was brilliant!
