@msg, Thanks for sharing those truths, and for your kind words. You're right about roles reversing somewhat over time. It is a chance to give back just a fraction of what has been give to us. Also I agree it is the small, thoughtful gestures which matter.

Hi guys, I visited my folks on the weekend. Mum was still experiencing hearing/equilibrium issues, but her spirits were higher and she looked happier. I wanted to thank everyone again for your prayers and support which I know are helping :).

My Mum's health has unfortunately been declining since her fall. A week and a half ago, she experienced a hallucination related to her condition, tripped and broke her arm. She was sent to hospital by ambulance. Fortunately the break was only a hairline fracture, however last night my father visited me and gave me the bad news she has been diagnosed with a rare incurable disease 'Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease' (CJD). Life expectancy for this disease is no more than 1 year, but given my Mum's rapid decline in health, it could be much shorter. Most upsetting of all (particularly for my Dad) is, Mum wont be coming home. The Hospital are moving Mum into a specialised care facility with nursing staff as soon as arrangements can be made.

I really don't understand why with so many prayers, God would allow this cruel disease to befall a kind and caring person like my Mum. It makes me mad. But I have to block that out and be strong for my Dad, cherish what time I have left with my Mum, and try to make her last days on earth as comfortable as possible.

    Bodhi,
God has a plan for your mother, and the plan for you is to remain strong for your father. Your mother was stricken by this horrible disease for no other explanation than by chance/divine planning. A few months back my wife lost her mother on our anniversary and 9 days later my wife's brother died unexpectedly. We never know why these family tragedies happen but with our deity belief we knew God had this planned and was planned for a reason. The next few months will be very trying and stressful for you and your family, but do not allow your mother to witness any of the sadness; make her final time on this earth as pleasant and happy as possible. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I visited Mum in the care facility tonight. She was in good spirits all things considered & was pleased to see me. She seemed more comfortable after the Nurses had made further changes to improve her comfort. We are very lucky that Mum is in a facility with not only the multi-disciplinary staff she needs (being a sub-acute hospital), but also caring Nursing staff who evidently use the latest technology to manage things like medications.

Dad told me the other day when he was visiting Mum a solo singer/guitarist came into the ward and sang easy listening music appropriately low level especially for each patient in the ward. When it was Mum's turn to be serenaded, Dad said she had a big smile on her face and was tapping her fingers to the music which is heart-warming. There are some good people in the world :).

There are some good people in the world :).

Recognize that you are one of those people. As is your dad.
And reward your mom's obvious influence on that fact. Do so by remaining strong and then remaining in good spirits to the best of your ability. And then try harder.

That's a very good way of saying, "Thanks, Mom, I love you".

Prayers for you and your family.

I visited Mum in hospital on Good Friday, along with my brother's family, and brought her a card & small box of Haighs chocolates. We tried to make it a nice day for her.

I am so sorry to hear of the problems your mother is experiencing. I pray God will comfort you and your family during this time.

God is sovereign over all. He has complete control over everything in this universe--He designed it, after all! Everything God allows he allows for his glory. He shows his glory so that others will see Him and recognize Him and praise Him and turn to Him at all times, but especially in times of trouble and need. Jesus tells us "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Mat 11:28. Only God, through His son Jesus Christ, can give us the comfort we seek. Not the world, not worldly things, not worldly counsel; only the truth that comes from His holy, infallible, inerrant Word.

Jesus tells us as believers we will have troubles in this world. Look at Paul, he wrote half of the New Testament, and he had a "thorn" in his side that he prayed three times for God to take away and God's answer was "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Cor 12:9. All the Apostles were martyred, except John. Steven was stoned to death. And still today Christian persecution continues all over the world. See, it didn't just start with ISIS, it's been going on for millennia.

But for me, the most compelling book of the Bible to show God's mercy, grace, and control over all is the book of Job. Read just the first two chapters and you will see why. Job was one of God's most faithful servants, yet God allowed Satan to destroy Job's entire family and all of his worldly possessions. Why would God allow Satan to take everything from a man who was so faithful? So loving? So in love with God? Hadn't Job done what God commanded? The reason, is to show God's glory.

It is comforting to me to know God allows the suffering, the sickness, the disease, and the death that sometimes comes from these infirmities, and also the death that always comes at some point. I take comfort in it because I can recognize it is not dependent on me to make my loved one well. No amount of prayer, no amount of faith, will change what God has ordained. God still wants us to pray, he wants us to be faithful, He commands these things. We have to be obedient to him. But His glory is not dependent on what we want or desire, or even our survival.

I take comfort in it because I can't imagine what the world would be like if God DIDNT have control over these things. If we were subject to the whims of Satan and all the evil in the world without God having control of it, our lives, though they are tough now a lot of the time, they would be infinitely worse without God having His hand in it.

Having said all this, and there is a lot more to say, I recognize, I KNOW first hand the pain you feel is deep and real. I recognize the doubt and dismay that creep into your thoughts morning and night. I understand the desire you have to want your loved one here with you for your entire life. I understand the heartache, the loneliness, the guilt, the loss; I understand it all first hand. I recognize our heads may understand what the Bible says about all of this, but our hearts only feel the pain and anguish, because our hearts have not caught up to our heads. I'm told the heart will catch up, I'm waiting for that day.

Second Corinthians 4:8 tells us in this life we will be "perplexed, but not driven to despair." We may not and cannot understand many things, but we must remember God is in control, and if He is allowing something, He is allowing it for His glory, and glorifying God is what this life is all about. We cannot allow ourselves to fall into a pit of despair, we must continue to read His Word to to stay away from that pit.

The miracle to recognize is not that Jesus was born of a virgin, nor that he was fully God in human flesh, but that he rose from the dead. That is the miracle we should celebrate every day with every breath we have.

And, hey, chocolate bunnies are mighty fine in their own right! Happy Easter!
