  • The ARC D-51 and SP3a-1 are from the classic Audio Research era, especially the preamp. I believe I have schematics for them if you need. The pass transistor used in the preamp's power supply will often fail and require replacing and power supply filter caps should be checked out. I believe ARC offers service and upgrading to maintain the value. The preamp can sell for triple what it originally sold for.

    Ken,

Thanks a lot for the information. I will PM you my email as I would love to have the schematics for them. Not sure I will keep them or not yet.

Ken is a keeper for sure. A few years ago he came across some wire he thought was pretty decent. He posted a thread to see if any of us wanted to try it. A few of us did I was one and I am still using it, he put RCA's on it and ship all on his dime.
GREAT GUY. There aren't many left at Polk like Ken and Kim. When Mark left and Helen retired I was a little worried but these guys ROCK.

Something I should have mentioned earlier, if the D-51 is going to be used with an SDA speaker then the connections will be different than usual. The negative speaker terminal should be connected to the amp's "4" ohm tap instead of the "0" tap. Then the positive speaker connection will be to the "8" ohm tap if the speaker is 4 ohm and if the speaker is 8 ohm then use the "16" ohm tap for connection.
"pitgogg2" I'm glad you're still using the RG62 based cables, I made some a few months ago for myself for a long tape deck connection.

A few years ago I emailed a request for the manual for my ARC amp to ARC.
I paid $10 for it. They sent me that and a set of original sales flyers.
    It included schematics.
They also answered some questions about the best tubes to use with it.
Hard to go wrong with any of their products.
