Sandy Gross in June's Stereophile

Options
Hello,
There's an interesting interview with Sandy Gross in the June issue of Stereophile, here's an excerpt:

Q: The Polk Monitor 10 was popular with audiophiles?

A: Matt came up with the 10, a larger version of the 7, one summer when I was out on the road. There's an interesting story about it. We were quite friendly with Jon Dahlquist and his partner Saul Marantz. In fact, Saul was something of a mentor to me. One day I got a phone call from Saul. They had taken a two-room suite at the upcoming Washington Hi-Fi how, and had planned to show the Dahlquist DQ-6 in the second room. It never materialized, so Saul was wondering if we would like to show with them. They were quite a prestigious entity, which we graciously accepted. You could say the Monitor 10 became what Dahlquist had hoped the DQ-6 would be.

There are other questions about the development of the SDA and RTA12 (described by Sandy as "perhaps the best pure audiophile product in the line") and Monitor 7.

Enjoy, Ken

The RTA12's sounded dandy to me, but I got hooked on the soundstage of the SDAs.

Is this posted online somewhere or only in the magazine?

Thanks Ken. I subscribe to the digital version of Stereophile and had missed this as I tend to focus on the equipment reports. Very interesting and informative interview.

It's a great read but it sounded like he was the brains behind Polk. Makes one wonder how the Polk name ever came about.

Matt has always described Sandy as the audio enthusiast of the three, the first guy to have a Rabco SL-8E straight line tonearm in his system, for example. I've talked to him on a couple of times about what he uses, I know he had a Maplenoll Ariadne turntable at one time, probably has a Walker now. He used Martin Logan CLS as his surround channel speakers and was enthusiastic about the Sony PS1 CD player. A long time ago a friend and I went to the house where the three partners lived to buy a Rabco that Sandy had put up for sale. The house was just filled with all kinds of audio gear, wall to wall tube amps and speakers.
Sandy has one of the best relationships with his dealers and customers in audio. If you're one of his dealers he has made it his business to really understand what drives your particular market.
Matt was the engineer and inventor, George was the woodworker and craftsman and Sandy was the audio nut. Good combination.

Yes. That would be copying and distributing copyrighted material without permission. Using a small excerpt from the article is allowed under "fair use" laws.

Gross: As for the turntable, vinyl still rules.....

I think that sums things up nicely. Would you agree Jesse?
