using a LP stylus brush

Options
A very tacky looking record stylus sweeper brush came w/ my JVC QL-A200. I never did mount the thing but do gently sweep the stylus w/ volume down low. I know some of you guys have very expensive tt and I was wondering if you use said brush of some sort attached to the cart or headshell ? To clean my actual LPs I use Phan-Stat and the rag provided2ntzsfczrns2.jpg

I wouldn't clean my stylus with that brush, it's there way of selling you a replacement stylus from using that thing. To me it looks like one of the brushes you would use to clean the pad of your discwasher with. Get you a nice stylus brush the needle doctor has a good selection.

I use an Onzow Zerodust to clean my stylus. It is a blob of gel that will look like a teenagers forehead after a few stylus cleanings. One dips the stylus in and out of the blob using the cue lever. When the blob is yukky, just clean it off. A snagged web pic.

Although the air bearing arm tends to blow air across the surface of record so dust doesn't fall on it, I confess to using an old Dust Bug.

The brush in the OP isn't a record nor a stylus brush -- it's a brush that Discwasher started to include ca. 1978 with the Discwasher record brush to clean the brush's corduroy-esque surface! It is custom sized and shaped to fit into the handle cutout of the brush, astride the bottle of Discwasher fluid that also fit in there.

As I recall, the earliest Discwashers had no such brush; the first one I bought did... I've actually rarely used it.

The classic way to quick-clean a Discwasher brush, of course, was to brush it firmly but not too firmly across the thigh of one's 1970s-fashionably faded Levis jeans :- )

    I will photo-document this anon :-P

Well -- interestingly the dimensions of this one (ca. 1978) are obviously somewhat different... still pretty sure that's what we're dealin' with :-P

Thanks I almost pulled my discwasher out to take a picture. I do believe that the new discwashers are a RCA product and the brush that accompanies it looks more like the picture Lew posted.

They are indeed "RCA" (which is just a name at this point anyway); presumably the form factor of the bottle (or at least its cap) has changed at some point in the intervening decades.

Once upon a time, Discwasher also made/sold a nice stylus brush called the (EDIT) SC-2. It was a brush made of a very, very dense matrix of vertical fibers. One wet it with a drop of the DW fluid, and dragged the stylus through it (so to speak), back to front (of course; i.e., the same direction in which the stylus encounters a record whilst playing it) to clean the stylus. I still use mine on occasion.

RCA? Yeah, even I have the current version and I do not spin much. Surprising how similar it looks to the late 70's model!

But my favorite is TT aficionados with the "microscopes" who fret endlessly about the diamond hard surface of their stylus as it braves the abrasive DOOM of cheap vinyl? I guess I just can't distinguish the tracking distortions from all the other surface noises. lol

I jest of course. Vinyl boys and girls are very serious about their medium. Back to front, of course!

No telescope used here. To check my stylus, I just put a test scratch on somebody's windshield. When it don't scratch the glass, I get a new stylus.... ;)

Well there you go. I think doc Hardy is right because I found the brush. This was the 1st cleaner used when I had my long gone Denon tt. Same deal only beige and plastic bubble cover.Cleaner fluid and I guess the brush were included somehow but no cut outs and only the RCA logo and a directional arrow on the side.. You be right again doc. Thanks. No pix you already know what it looks like.

Another Magic Eraser user here @Keiko . I keep a piece glued to a nickel for drop in (cue) cleanings and another very thin piece glued to the end of a toothpick as a flexible brush for intermittent deep cleans around the bases. Seems to work OK and one ME is a decades long supply practically.

I like the look/idea of that Oznow though @SCompRacer!

It (Onzow Zerodust) gets very, very good reviews -- although, I've gotta admit, I am kind of suprised that no-one's mentioned the... curious... similarity of Zerodust to a class of "sticky, stretchy" window walker toys that are... rather less expensive.

Please note, I am NOT advocating that folks use "sticky hands" toys in lieu of audiophile products for cleaning delicate styli... I'm just sayin'...

I dunno. I guess if you buy the Onzow at Needledoctor you can gripe about the price. Look around just beware of fakes.

The fact that the Zerodust is in a small square box with cover means I don't have to target a particular area of an animal or human shape toy and risk tweaking my cantilever. I have no regrets buying the audio product, and I didn't pay $69 for it. Can't say I have used the magnifier cover much though...lol

I would also say that's it's worth the investment in the actual product -- but, heck, numerous posters to this thread have already copped to using Mr. Clean products on their styli... (yeah, I have, too; but I only use cheap cartridges, and the one 'spensive one I have didn't impress me at all sonically).
