Looking for a small/mini subwoofer

I've done a little looking, but thought I'd ask for suggestions/comments. I need a small/mini subwoofer for my shop. It will sit on a large shelf along with a TV, AVR, 2 small satellites and a small center. The shelf is rock solid, so no concern there. That said, I'd like to keep the sub at or under an 11" cube. It needs to be front firing, have an LFE connection and be powered with auto on/off. It also needs to be a sealed design, ported just will not work as it will be more or less in a corner.

These are 2 I've looked at so far, http://www.nhthifi.com/Subwoofer-home-theater-Super-8?sc=12&category=3779#image-4

Dan, it rolls off quick at 60Hz.

Mikey, intriguing indeed, but yeah the dual woofers won't work.

Steve, wish I had the room for that one.

I have an older model Velodyne I bought new around 2000. Still works the same as the day I bought it. Much older technology (class AB amp), but very good quality, very good sound. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

That one looks like it fits your requirements.

Only thing I'd be concerned with on the Velodyne, is Customer Service, Support, after warranty parts etc.
I have not heard good things about them.

I'm leaning toward the Velodyne, it's a bit deeper than I'd like, but the width and height are perfect, goes low too. I looked around for service problems, but didn't see a whole lot of issues. One guy was bitching about no parts for his 20 year old sub.....cry me a river.

I like the NHT for size and all, but it seems it should go lower. That new Sunfire still rolls off too low. The SVS I know will not fit, I always measure twice, cut once. I like the looks of the PSB, but man, it's smaller than the satellites....just ain't right, ya know....LOL

Wow, $900 budget for and 8"? You are serious! Looks like a beast of an 8".

I was looking for a small sealed myself to mate up with my KEF sats to go in my bedroom but the KEF Kube-1 is more than I want to pay. I was thinking of making one maybe using the Dayton RS driver or JBl GTO804 as I have very limited space next to the dresser. Only a small cube or tall narrow ported will fit. However, I came across the Pinnacle SUBcompact8 that I am considering...it does have a crossover bypass switch for LFE HT use also.

About the only feedback I can find is below. The first guy thought only the Velo Minivee sounds better overall from the few compact subs he has heard...but thought the Pinnacle was pretty good.

Yeah I know, a $900 sub for a shop rig is just a bit crazy considering that it is more money than the brand new TV and AVR put together. Thanks for the lead on the Pinnacle, it looks very promising. I've heard of the company, but have never heard any of their products. That may change very soon.

Lot's of good leads here......aren't you a woodworker with mad skills in the electronic field?? Why not build one to your exact specs and call it a wrap?? I'm thinking it would be one bad **** unit and something to be real proud of, plus who knows..the makings of a new "low end authority" ?? That's the kind of faith I have in you bro!

DIY can be a great thing sometimes. I was really into building 8's for light SQ bass back in my car audio days. I love showing this pic of my old eD e8A I built. I loved this mini cube...I even used it upfront on the center hump in an old beater I had.

    3701051c-f68e-486e-b631-4eeef553cc34.jpg

There are other cool drivers (like the JBL GTO804 in my first post) around that will make for a nice small sealed system for home use. The RE Audio REXv2-8 is another. Great specs, great price! 24.5Hz Fs, 13mm XMAX
    http://reaudio.com/products/woofers_rex.php
    http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_77320_RE-Audio-REXv2-8.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PLA&scid=scplp7130944&gclid=CNS_mNrAucECFQtgMgodEkgAPw

However, by the time you buy the driver, cheap $100, 200W amp, materials, etc you are at the cost of something like the Pinnacle sub above....not sure of how much of a performance difference there is?

As far as besting the Velodyne MiniVee with a DIY sealed 11" cube? Don't think there are any drivers that will do that? Even the JL Audio W7 needs a larger enclosure to work. The MiniVee cost $900 for good reason. It uses a pretty beefy driver engineered for small sealed that has a composite resin/Kevlar cone, oversized aluminum frame, oversized spider, oversized rubber surround, oversized voice coil, and 12.7 lbs magnet! Mated with a super efficient 1000 watt amp, DAMN!

    image_mini

I...seriously doubt there is anything else this size that can top this sub.
    http://www.audioholics.com/subwoofer-reviews/velodyne-minivee

...but I could not spend $900 for a sealed 8" sub.... unless I really needed it to do a lot of work and had no others options that would fit...and I had that type of cash laying around. Still, I'm sure the modest priced yet over achieving Pinnacle sub is all many would need for a small system....and the price is about the most I would spend for such a limited situation.

Now in terms of DIY 18" subs for HT....there is a cost to performance and DIY pride that makes sense. Given some of the good and affordable drivers available as well as affordable high power class D and pro audio amps available today. Hard to beat a pair of Stereo Integrity HT18's for $300, A 2000 watt Peavey IPR2 2000 for $360, and build/buy a couple of MartyCube enclosures/flatpacks for $200-$400. DIY and used is the only way to get that much bass for under$1K. New would be at least twice as much.

A system like this would literally shake the small 1400 sq ft rental home I currently live in, to pieces. Just the RT3000p subs alone get things rattling pretty good. When I buy again hopefully I will have more space and a dedicated music and/or theater room. I then plan to build my 2 ch speakers, another sub, and who knows what else.

I am a fan of the smaller velodyne sealed box subs. Musical, fast and deep. I have a bigger spl1200 and I did have a power supply issue a few years ago but, a local shop fixed it for like 100 or 120$.

I have heard a few NHT products. It's one of thoes company's people forget about how musical their speakers and subs sound.

It would be a hard call for me between the NHT and the Velo.

I use NHT monitors in my office. I'd say they were ok stock, but after crossover mods they are a far better speaker and yes, very musical. What's amazing is they hit 38Hz using a 6.5" driver in a small cabinet.

So, I bought the new Pinnacle SubCompact 8 from the eBay seller last Tuesday. Says it would be here on Friday the 24th, says item location Bethpage, NY. Nope to both. Shipped from Gardena. CA and didn't get here until today, but that's not the worst of it. The outer box says SubCompact 8, but the sub inside is the PS Sub 8-300. I'm not happy!
