Many of us here have 30+ year old Polk speakers that still get used daily.

A lot of hi-fi shops up there sell used gear, check them out. Also....as to your inquiry about lasting a long time, as long as proper care is given ...yes they will. That doesn't mean you can bury the volume dial and expect them to last forever.

US Audio Mart has a Canadian version also.....as well as your local craigslist.

As tonyb said Canuck audio mart is a great place. I picked up several bargains there. It is pretty tough to find deals up here. There are some to be had though. Or bite the bullet and buy something new. And you don't have to worry.

You want solid state amplifiers. Narrow your search by adding it into the search area on the left towards the top.

    Try HI-FI SHARK too.....

With the power you're looking for you want class AB. 400wpc class A would really be something though.

If you set them as small and the crossover to 80hz for the sub, then you will be fine.

Yes. If you hear audible distortion you were doing damage to your speakers long ago on the volume dial.

You never want to max out the volume dial, under any circumstances....with or without an amp.

To start, one plugs into 120V AC from your wall, the other off a cars 12v DC system.

Sure, you just have to bring a car battery into your house as well as put it on a trickle charger every night or buy a 120v to 12v DC converter which is going to be at least an extra $100. It would be a lot of hassle for a lot less sound quality.

Recommending a volume level with an AVR isn't the same as with a 2 channel pre amp. Your AVR likely uses the dB scale, so with those speakers and that AVR I doubt you would be able to go past -20dB without damaging something.

When the sound stage collapses and it starts to sound shrill and stressed, you've gone too far. If a protection circuit, polyswitch, or fuse trips you've gone WAY too far.

based on what you all said and since my ears are not fine-tune enough to hear when the clipping starts lol
ive decided to block the max volume at 22.5 my avr goes from -80db to +16db

at-20 sounds clear to me bit -22.5 is perfect for movies n going lower cant hurt righ

after all i can put it much louder once i get the amp:D till then this will due just fine

As I've found it may not go exceptionally "louder" maybe a bit but at the higher volumes the dynamics will be vastly improved. Sound won't get compressed or break down so easily. Remember, to get an additional 3Db of loudness you literally have to double the power to feed to a speaker as a general rule of thumb. That said the serious improvements in dynamics will be a rather good experience.

    Agree.

Aicardi, nice set-up. Once you add a nice amp to the system, I believe you'll be amazed at the performance difference in the A9's. They really like clean power and are a very good dual purpose speaker.
