Wow I heard one this morning that I hadn't heard in years, I said wow this has gotta be one of the saddest songs of all time, and I looked in the inter webs, and no one had it on their top 10 or even top 100...

The song was Shannon by Henry Gross from the 70's.

anyone familiar with it?

What is your saddest song?

    Sad but true..................................

"I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive"
    Hank Williams

Now you're lookin' at a man that's gettin' kind-a mad
I had lot's of luck but it's all been bad
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

My fishin' pole's broke the creek is full of sand
My woman run away with another man
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

A distant uncle passed away and left me quite a batch
And I was livin'g high until that fatal day
    A lawyer proved I wasn't born
    I was only hatched

Ev'rything's again' me and it's got me down
If I jumped in the river I would prob'ly drown
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

These shabby shoes I'm wearin' all the time
Are full of holes and nails
And brother if I stepped on a worn out dime
I bet a nickel I could tell you if it was heads or tails

I'm not gonna worry wrinkles in my brow
'Cause nothin's ever gonna be alright nohow
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

I could buy a Sunday suit and it would leave me broke
If it had two pair of pants I would burn the coat
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive

If it was rainin' gold I wouldn't stand a chance
I wouldn't have a pocket in my patched up pants
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive
If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

""Shannon", a song written about the death of Beach Boy Carl Wilson's Irish Setter of the same name."

The Beach Boys sang back up harmonies on this song. It is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard but also one of my most favorite songs because of the beautiful harmonies.

I new it was a Wilson... getting f ing old bro... yeah henry was quite the vocalist and more of a rocker than most people know.

I saw him back in the '70's in asbury park convention center.. he was a replacement act for thin lizzy with Blackmore's Rainbow, and I remember we were all bummed out cuz we wanted to see thin lizzie...we didnt know who the eff he was... but henry gross brought the roof down he rocked!!!

He then sang shannon as his encore and everyone said Oh that Henry Gross!!!

    Sam Stone by John Prine

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose.
    Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios. Mmm....
